Darkness for casing?
    #434129 - 10/23/01 11:40 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

Just wondering... Why does everyone say that you have to let your casing's begin to colonize in darkness? From the moment I first put that top layer of coco fiber on my casing's they have been exposed to light 24/7 now. It's been 6 days and 2 casings are already showing mass colonization and massive pinning as well... so wtf is up with that 12/12 dark / light bullshit I keep hearing?

The BULLSHIT your refering too.....darkness, is just a rule of thumb. It's more natural to have your mycl. colo. in complete darkness. Then when ready....you expose them to light(kinda lets the mycl. know it's time to make a body, because they came out into the open, which means they done their job), and colder temps.(which also means since they made it out into the open temps. will be colder).
Now you really don't have to do it this way. My opinion/observation is when you expose them to light all the time, you might be in for a little longer waiting time of fruitation.
Good Luck!

i believe the dark is to keep the first little strands of mycelium from pinning as soon as they hit the surface.. you need about 30% colonization before initating pinning." so wtf is up with that 12/12 dark / light bullshit I keep hearing?" i think the 12/12 is for marijuana not shrooms. i give my fruiting casings about 3 hrs of light a day at most and no light while casing colonizes...

12/12 cycle should only be used for flowering of marijuana. the vegetative period will benefit twice as much with 24/7 lighting.

Well, I've cased then placed in a chamber without darkness or recovery time and had nice flushes. But the idea behind casing then darkness is to achieve an even pinset. It has many advantages.

If you case then place, you 'll just need to patch early mycelia spots with casing once to achieve similar results.

When pinning/fruiting, a dark period encourages growth spurts, and of course, in nature there is a dark period.
