Incubating cakes but going away for a week, need advice
    #4326780 - 06/22/05 10:00 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all,
I've been incubating 7 pf jars of B+ for almost 3 weeks (Sunday will be 3 weeks exactly) and I'm leaving town for a week on Friday. 6 of the 7 jars are over 50% colonized and one or two are almost at 100%. I have one jar thats only like 25% colonized, if that. I tryed flipping it and it helped alittle but the growth is still slow. Should i just leave them all incubating for the week I'm away or should i maybe keep them in a dark place at room temp to continue colonizing, just at a slower rate. As for the one jar thats going real slow, anyone got any recommmendations for what I should do to get it up to speed like the rest? The jar might be a little dry but I honestly think it's because I didn't inoculate the jar with enough spores (My first grow). Any type of advice will help, i just dont want my jars to crap out on me while I'm gone. Thanks.

Your jars should be fine for a week. If you would like then place the fully colonized jars in a dark room temperature area for the duration of your abscence or if you have an automated terrarium then throw em' in. Try giving your jars gas exchange if they are colonizing slowly.

You Could drop the temp to slow them down a bit or even put them in the fridge. Gl

best thing that could happen is you leave them alone and when you get back they are pinning invitro

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Thanks guys. What if I took the jar that was colonizing slow and put it in a zip-lock bag with a little water in it to replenish the jar if its drying out? I read that somewhere, thought maybe that'd help as well. Thanks again

thats not a good idea, you'll likely introduce contams by trying to add water while it's colonizing

don't worry about it. your jars will be fine, I have 2 month old fully colonized jars that are sooooo fluffy, they're shrunk from lost moisture but I can still case them with success.. I've yet to experience pinning invitro

Think about commercial growkits, they are sitting around dehydrated for a long time before they are grown out successfully. Invitro pinning will need light, and some strains and substrates are more prone to invitro pinning than others. Don't add water.

If i were you, i would just leave my jars wherever they have been incubating. Even if they go past full colonization then all that will happen is over-incubation(which is not a bad thing), and possibly pinning invitro. Over-incubation has actually been said to make mushies more potent.

Ok, so I'm definatly scratching the idea of adding more water. I'm going to leave them all incubating for the week. I flipped all my jars to make sure not as much water escapes. I just wanted to make sure over-incubating won't harm them. Also, what is pinning invitro? I've never heard of that term. When I come back to town, I'm going to dunk and roll them. Anyone know where I can get a guide for that? Also, is it worth casing my brf jars when i come back? i might even just case half of the jars. Thanks again for all your help and info.
