ok, i've been trying to do more of this lately, especially while i play guitar. my voice isn't all that great though.. better after a drink but still not too good.

is there any exercises i can do to improve the sound of my voice?

also, i'm having trouble making a vocal melody to go along with riffs i play. all i can sing is the same note as i'm playing on the guitar, you know what i mean?

I know exactly what you mean. It's hard to do when your not a natural singer.

I'm trying to do the same thing at present and I'm hopefully sorted for some singing lessons. I guess to be able to sing and play fluently is all down to practise.

try this fung:
with your riff playing in your head, (or record it and loop it playing back) try and figure out a melody on your guitar, then sing along and just practice that way.

as for general exercises for your voice... it might be worth it to join a community chorus at your local university. It is actually really fun and gives you lessons on how to sing conventionally. Then you can use that and develop your own style.

You play the music reeaaallly loud and you sing along right? Progressively turn down the music so after awhile your voice is louder than the actual music....and if you like what you hear, you're doing good.
