In appreciation of my Father today

I wrote this poem for my Dad on Father's Day 8 years ago. Thought I might share it with all of you today.

MY HERO

We go through life and day by day we learn and love and grow
And strive each day to be a better man
And often times there is someone we say is our hero
And we try to be more like them if we can.

These heroes are a special breed, they're strong and brave and true
They always stand up for the thing that's right
They're helpful and they're caring and they stand by what they do
And they never start but always end a fight.

They come in every shape and size that you could ever guess
They come from almost every walk of life
They could be a famous football star or World Champ at chess
Or scientist or actor or housewife.

And I'm the same as everyone, I have a hero to
And I must say that I am mighty glad
To have the chance to share some laughter and a tear or two
With my hero, cause you see, he is my dad.

I've never met another who impressed me like he does
He always has a some wisdom with a smile
I always walk away a little better than I was
After I have sat and talked with him a while.

He always has some sound advice to help me on my way
Or a shoulder I can lean on when I'm down
And when he sees that I have had a really rotten day
He finds a way to chase away my frown

Some people say "Do as I say, but don't do as I do"
But not my dad, the way he strives to teach
Is to set a good example for all folks like me and you
He truly practices the things he'll preach.

He is a large man, strong and brave, you'd want him on your side
There is no doubt that he can hold his own
But he is full of caring love, and very little pride
In him the seeds of kindness have been sown

And every time his name comes up and people speak of him
They always look on him with high regard
He's well liked, and his reputations never dull or grim
And they heap upon him praises by the yard

When someone turns to me and asks "just who is your hero?"
I do not even stop to skip a beat
I proudly say with great respect "He is my dad, you know"
"To me there is no one who could compete"

And so I could go on and on a talking ?bout my dad
He's my hero, no doubt will always be
I'm just so happy that I've had the chances that I've had
To know him and to have him there for me

And if someday I am a dad and my child looks at me
And in their eyes I look into my past
I'll see my dad, and know that if I have lived worthily
Then I will be my child's hero at last.
