too little nutrient

I have a friend who made some jars with too little nutrient (brf) and the myeclium doesnt have the same life in it anymore cause of lack of nutrient. He is going to case can he put some sterlie finch seed on top between the mycelium and coco fiber? Would this work or is he risking contamination with uncolonized substrate?

I think it sounds a little risky to put uncolonized finch seed underneath a casing layer. It seems like that would almost guarantee contamination. Have the jars fully colonized on their own? If so, I say case them like normal. If they haven't fully colonized, just give them some more time.

can he break cakes up before they are intirely colonized if he removes the un colonized substrate?

Yeah, that works. Just make sure you take off ALL of the uncolonized substrate.
