I want to like the Grateful Dead and Phish
    #4261561 - 06/05/05 09:05 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I'm a very open minded philosophical person who listens to all music from classical (adaggio for strings, anyone?) to the most brutal death metal and grind (cryptopsy or anal cunt, anyone?) and everything in between.

I just have NEVER been exposed to the dead or phish other than the songs "truckin'" and phish's "bounce around the room" or whatever it is.

I know I would love them...so where do I start?

Just wondering maybe also what a good site is. Their official site sort of stinks.

i felt the same way when i first got into the dead and phish.

its tricky because the essence of these bands is in live performances, and there are sooo many recordings of live shows. so its pretty much trial and error. you go around to sites like www.archive.org and download shows..

the process goes something like this:

download... nope, shitty show
download... crappy show
download... boringgg
download... no good
download... YES! finally a good one

i would recommend livephish.com for good phish downloads but you have to pay for those. its like 13 bucks per show, so if ur interested in that PM me and i'll recommend some of my favorites

DEAD songs u need to check out:
deal
bertha
eyes of the world
franklins tower
estimated prophet
the music never stopped
peggy o
shakedown street
brown eyed women

PHISH songs u need to check out:
birds of a feather
back on the train
bathtub gin
wolfmans brother
walls of the cave
david bowie
moma dance
you enjoy myself
tube
down with disease
chalk dust torture
pebbles and marbles
mikes song

that should give you a decent start.. good luck hah

go to nugs.net

they have tons of great music...

my favorite phish:

david bowie
you enjoy myself
fee
down with disease
stash
bug
first tube
the divided sky
the moma dance
birds of a feather
NICU
harry hood
run like an antelope

my favorite dead:

help on the way
minglewood blues (especially from the 5/8/77 show at Barton Hall, that's my favorite dead show so far.. actually, most of these songs are from that show, or at least in that show..)
chinacat sunflower
ship of fools
jack straw
terrapin station
mama tried
brown eyed women
row jimmy
fire on the mountain
scarlet begonias
friend of the devil
tennessee jed

there's a hell of a lot more good stuff by those bands but those songs are just the cream of the crop imo.

hope you dig it.. it's really good shit once you get into it.

If you don't mind paying for a CD buy "Without a Net." It's a double live CD that will turn your world upside down.

Shakedown street. man get to the classics, Not Fade Away, Samson & Delilah. When i think the dead thats it.

Phish..... oooooh, i donno. probably farmhouse. more pop-ish sound, phish can be pretty prog, but Farmhouse is probably my favorite phish song, most likely the first i ever heard or sumthin'.
