Got Some Plastic Lids...
    #4260186 - 06/05/05 02:39 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

They are under $3 for a package of 8 at Wal-Mart, so I got 4 packs. I went home to drill them and found out that a big drill bit will usually crack the plastic. So I decided to drill 7 holes in the lid, the middle one will be used for inoculation:

What do you guys think about this? I think it should be fine.....

If you're using tyvek for gas exchange, sure!

go with a much higher speed when drilling (a dremel would be perfect). the slow speed kind of cuts into plastic causing it to crack. a high speed kind of shaves and melts the plastic which produces better holes.

Where did you find them? at my Wal-Mart I can only find the metal lids by the jars, aren't the plastic lids supposed to be there, too?

Oh yeah I was gonna address that. A new Wal-Mart opened up pretty close by to where I live so I went to see if they had them and they did. After I got done drilling them at another location and decided I needed some more, went to a different Wal-Mart and they did not have them. Just keep checking all the Wal-Marts in your area. You are bound to find them  If you can't, try crafts stores or other places that might carry mason jars or order them online as a last resort

Set your lids on top of a piece of 2'by 4' when drilling. That should help with your cracking problem.

You can also run very hot tap water over them to soften the plastic up a bit and that stops them from cracking.

I ordered 100 of those plastic lids from fungi.com, and ended up throwing every one of them away. I kept getting bacterial contamination in my jars and couldn't figure out why. I finally realized the filter was getting wet with grain juice when I shake the jars, then the bacteria would colonize right through the filter. I tried them with tyvek and synthetic filter disks and had the same problem. I went back to the metal lids so I could put the filter material on the outside of the lid rather than the inside. I hope you have better luck than I did, but I don't recommend them.

Were you using the rubber washer with the plastic lids?

Thats why they were cracking. When the drill busts though the plastic with nothing behind it, it will rip, tear and crack.

I hope to hell that doesn't happen to me. I know what you mean about the juice getting on the tyvek, I already saw that happen to my first four I sterilized. I didn't even need to shake the grain to break it up, it was really loose (or is the shaking to evenly distribute the moisture?) Anyways, people are putting tyvek on first then the lids, even metal lids and shaking and still colonizing jars so I don't know what's going on.....Hmmmm.........

I think I will try 12 plastic and 12 metal and see what happens....

you could also try a soldering iron or a wood burning iron to just melt some holes. no worries about cracking them then. i have used them to weld plastic parts together, so i don't see why you couldn't use one for this. i think RR is on to something there about the tyvek though. i'm gonna stick with the metal lids. easy enough.

When you use the plastic lids, you have to use the rubber washers,

If not, you will let air in the jar while it cools. Washers are $1.99 each, should be right there with the plastic lids. Its like trying to get a water pipe to not leak without teflon tape. You won't get a seal with just the plastic to glass.
