Inground Outdoor bed, moisture levels for colonization.
    #4252453 - 06/03/05 02:17 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Afoaf has an outdoor bed going but it is hard to get water to and the weather forcast is predicting warm dry weather for the next 5 days.
The beds were made very recently and are far from completely colonized, my question is how often do outdoor beds need to be watered when colonizing?

P.s. Once the straw, spawn and compost were packed down, a thin layer of straw was layed between two thin layers of the soil from the bed, the idea was to seal in the moisture in place of a casing layer. The bed is in a low laying area with nearly no direct sunlight.

Just use your blue thumb sense. If you have dry weather and the bed seems under hydrated to you, then water it. There's no written rule on these things.

i meant to mention that the beds are hard to get to. I just dont want the beds to dry out .... that would ruin everything.

Yeah, you gotta put them puppies where you can get water to them.
If you don't get water to them, they'll die, it's as simple as that.

some mycelia will survive a dry spell, but remain dormant.

check your patch after a good rain.

next time build the bed into your landscaping at home or around your neighborhood where there is a timed sprinkler system.  I bet adding soil-moist or some similar water binding materials to the substrate mix would help keep the internal moisture of the bed up nicely in between cycles of the sprinklers.
