Breaking up a fully colinized cake?
    #4246353 - 06/01/05 11:10 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

If I have a fully colonized cake made from brown rice flour and vermiculite, can I break it apart, add more sterile mixture, lay it out in a shallow container, add some sterile vermiculite as a casing and expect to produce a large crop?

What do you mean by "sterile mixture"? If you mean spawning your cake to something.. look here.

If you mean just something to use as a casing.. look here.

Read up some.

Good luck

You can but your just asking for contamination to happen. That really isnt the best route to take for bulk cultivation. You can cut up the cake into slices, lay them out flat, fill in the spaces in between with crumbled cake and case that. Ive done that and it works.

You can also drop a cake in a sterilized autoclavable bag of straw and inoculate that as a substrate. That works too.

Will it only produce the same amout as if it was whole? What exactly is sterilized autoclavable bag of straw? Is this something I can produce from supplies at a garden center?

You can get autoclavable spawn bags from sporeworks.com. Basically theyre plastic bags that wont melt in a pressure cooker. They also have a filter patch which will allow air exchange that will speed up the colonization process.

So you can pack it in with straw, rye berries, or bird seed and sterilize your bulk substrate. When it cools you would just throw in a cake and seal it. Limits contams more than what you are thinking about doing.
