We've all either told or heard jokes where somebody was offended by the "inappropriateness" of the joke. This has always interested me as all throughout my life I have been almost entirely immune to becoming offended.

In general the distinction between offensive/inoffensive and appropriate/inappropriate is arbitrary. Because of this I've found that understanding a persons sense of humor is typically far more valuable a tool for gaining insight than actually knowing the person very well when relating to them.

Where, if at all, do you draw the line and declare something to be inappropriate?
What makes it inappropriate?
What do you think influenced this thinking?

I understand that these thresholds are going to vary depending on what social group you're among so, for the sake of clarity, assume you're among your closest friends.

You draw the line when it bringes the border of your learned association of norms. These norms are set up by your social enviroment, and when someone goes outside them, you see their joke as 'inappropriate', as in your norms considering them not to be.
