got cakes, shrooms only on bottom...Should I Flip the Cake???

Ok, my friend just Started to see little guys poppin outta the vermiculite layer under his cakes. They surprised him cuz he was waiting to see the pins on the tops of the cakes. Some of the little guys are getting to be like 1/4" now. The cakes are on foil over perlite. Is Flipping the cake and perhaps placing the cake directly on the perlite or sterilized and moistened vermiculite a good idea? Should he maybe Just Flip it and leave it on the foil? any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sometimes the pins form along the sides and even near or on the bottom. Do you have a light proof container with only light coming from the top of the container? If your container is not light proof the shrooms will go towards any light in the container causing them to grow from the sides and bottom. Make sure you only have light coming from the top of your grow chamber not the sides.

I know what you mean 1happyshroomer! Like EnCHaNTeDHoBBiT says....they will grow towards light regardless of the direction. It must be the fact that your lid is solid. I had the same problem at first when I was just using cakes. I didnt want to have to buy new containers with clear lids so I just flipped the cake. so I have a larger surface area exposed to light. I dont mean flip it so the verm is then on top. Just flip it on its side. Try it and see. But depending on how big the shrooms are you might have to wait till after the first harvest. Cutting the cakes lengthwise and doing the flip withod also helps. This will shorten the time it would take to get the same yield.

they are growing there because the humidity is just right in that area and it caused pinning, Up the humidity and you will get pins everywhere

its 2 parts tahoe hit it on the head about the humidity being good and also you have them sitting on foil. foil is shiny and that means a source of light, so they are growing towards the foil also. now tripping chef suggested cutting the cakes in half. i did a little experimenting with that one time and my results were that fruits were a little smaller (not enough to worry about though) but the cakes were only good for 2 flushes before running out of nutes. so cutting the cakes is cool and all but not worth it, and take the foil off and set them on something non-reflective.

yeah he has plexiglass taped into the lid of the rubbermaid container...the shrooms should grow up toward the light but i was thinking it might be easier to pick em if they were growing from the top

I was thinking of taking the remaining cakes from this batch and casing...I plan on using vermiculite for the bottom layer....about 1/2 inch or so. getting it wet, putting down crumbled cakes and then jiffy seed starter for the top. i mean my friend plans on doing this I've had good luck with casing....is it necessary to sterilize all of your casing materials like vermiculite/jiffy??? (jiffy seed starter is peat moss, vermiculite and lime so PH is right to start with)

I was also thinking about just adding some vermiculite to the top of the cake and adding some water using a spraybottle to hydrate during the fruiting cycle...if my pins have become little shroomnubs, is this the right time to do that sort of thing?

I flipped the cakes and there were a bunch of shrooms under there...some of the cakes went directly on the perlite and some went back on the foil but upside down...one went on its side. I figured i might as well experiment. Thanks for all the suggestions. I think the humidity is a little low but i'll get it right thru trial and error! I know the humidity is right at the perlite level but might need to work on getting it up a few points.
