I hate everything (TiT Problems and Me Venting)
    #4203754 - 05/21/05 02:41 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

So as you know if you're following my grow log I'm on a tight budget and trying to do 30 Shiitake jars PF style.

Last night I spent over a hour trying to put a TiT together and finally managed to get it work perfectly with a constant 82 degrees when my one hour old heater decide to break. I was using two heaters, a 50 watt and a 200 watt one and of course it was the big bastard that broke. So in a panic, I dragged the TiT into my room and put it next to the space-board heater in my room and cranked the heat all the way up. It seems to be okay holding a temp anywhere from 82 to 84 degrees but now I'm really fucking paranoid about overheating or in someway fucking my spores up. Also I doubt I'm getting a even temp through the whole thing. I'm sure my spores are looking at me through the jar and thinking "What the fuck is going on here?". I think I'm going to go back to Petsmart and try to exchange it for another one but I don't know if they'll let me.

So my questions to the populace at large.
1. What is up with the rheostat I've been hearing about?
2. Is it submersible?
3. Will the temperature fluctuations hurt my spores?
4. Would I be better off turning everything off and leaving the TiT at room temp until I can get a reliable heater?

One cool note is that the 50 watt heater is pretty bad ass, I've done nothing but torture it and treat it badly and it's still running like a champ trying it damnedest to get and keep the temp up.

Le-Sigh... newbie problems.

Another interesting note, I almost lit myself on fire last night inoculating jars  :smirk:

try taking the heater back to the place you purchased it from.

I would.

get a fully submersible aquarium heater.

I'd get your TIT working again...if I was you.

Anyways new heater is in the TiT... life makes sense again.

I have one TiT going in the closet With about twenty jars in there and the closet seems to hold a constant temp of around 82 to 84 with an RH of around 50% so I just keep jars in there on the shelf with no problems as of yet anyway

Yup, I found turning my walk-in closet into an incubator was cheap and easy. Haven't had any problems yet.

Small ceramic heater with remote controll thermostat on sale at HD for $19.99. Have a small HEPA running in it. Set the remote on the shelf, set for 82 degrees, that's it.

300watt? What are you trying to heat, your pool? :smirk:

A 50watt should do fine, 100watt at the most...

You're only trying to heat 5 gallons or less, you dont need some much wattage..

TC, and nice HC, reminds me of scats closet

The TiT has been nothing but trouble for me (periodically banging head against keyboard) I think maybe I put too much water into the TiT or something because I couldn't get the temp where I wanted it with both a 200 watt and a 50 watt heater going at full blast... oh well now I have my jars sitting in a dry box in front of a heater with the 50 watt heater sitting in a glass of water. It should do alright but I'll probably get that space heater you were talking about hippie and make my spare room into a incubator.

Sigh... fucking trial and error.

When you put the water in and set the heater...

How long did you wait till you checked the temps.?

Sounds like you got a bit too impatient and checked way to much and changed it a lot, which would explain the flux-es

50watt is enough, good enough for a 5gallon tank

Not trying to sound like an asshole, but if you can't get an incubator as simple as this to work, then how do you expect to get a whole room going...Not just trial and error, Perseverance is key...

Tc man, good luck

The heaters in this copy of a old post came from e-bay. I have the 300 watt version here but they come in every size from 50 to 1000 watt.

Incubator set up.

1. First thing get your bottom tub and put in your heater. I also add a water pump to mix the water that way it heats up much more evenly but it isn?t a necessary item. I got the tape from a boat shop and it has been working for some time. Good stuff for underwater.

2. Next put something (I used tall half pints) in each corner of the tub. This will keep the heater and pump safe from being smashed if I put in to many jars or do something stupid.

3. Now be sure to set the heater before you put on the top tub. I attach the top tub with zip ties cause the top tub will want to float.

4. Add the water. I like to add as much water as I can before it starts to spill out.

5. If you use the heaters with the external controls set them now to get ready for the jars. Mine use a dial and a sensor that gives the temp inside the chamber rather then the water. It also has a metal bulb rather then a glass one.

6. Finished

get a stainless steel fully submersible aquarium heater...they don't break like the glass ones do.
your having some terrible luck with heaters!~
what brand are you buying?

you can incubate your jars by putting them on top of your frig in the box the jars came in.
the heat from the frig will colonize your jars.

if you have a cabinet over the frig...you can put your jars in that too.
I have several friends that use this method for colonization of their jars.

Thanks for all the info guys. The problem I think I'm having is that instead of putting the same amount of time and energy into the research of a incubator that I have all the other aspects of this project, I just had a vague notion of how it was supposed to go and tried to build from that.

The heater that has broke three times on me was a topfin 200 watt job. God they're junk. I can't wait until tomorrow when I get paid so I can go back to Petsmart and get a decent heater.

Sigh... I'm starting to get frustrated.

I think you and MOST people are trying too hard!
When I started, I wanted the best setup I could have, I had this elaborate TIT with silicon and a bunch of other stuff I didn't need.

Take it from me (Care of Roadkill) get a submersible heater (50W or 100W, you don't need more, your not heating that much water).
Next go to Walmart, Target, Meyer's, etc and find a two different size containers with the same size lids.  Rubbermaid makes a 14 gallon and and 18 gallon.  But the heater in the big tub, fill with water, and then just place the smaller one inside the larger.  No need for ties to hold it down.  Plus because the two containers fit well together, no extra humidity, and less chance for contams.

If you do the math you would only be heating 4 gallons of water, so you wouldn't need a big heater.  My own TIT could hold 15-18 quart jars.

Sorry if I came off rude, but this is simplest, and easiest TIT setup there is.

It's all good... I kind of fucked this up so badly that I deserve to get yelled at

You want to hear something funny? In my original planning phases I had a 18 gallon and 14 gallon tub exactly like what you're describing but through the course of putting this together I convinced myself that there's no way a setup so simple could work. So along the way I went and bought a ridiculously big 40 gallon tub, a bunch of different heaters, cutting up cardboard... all sorts of goofy shit. And now I guess I'm back to the realization that I should've done what I should've done in the beginning... god I can be dumb sometimes.

Simplicity I need to return too.

Thx ShroomDr and everyone... I'm going to do what you said if for nothing else the irony value. I guess I'll save the complicated setup for when I can actually get a jar to colonize :smirk: haha
