adverse health effects
    #4194426 - 05/19/05 07:31 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Hello, I was wondering something and I can't find much of an answer. There's either an uneducated no.. or no conclusive study at all. Do mushrooms have negative health effects? I don't assume that it would have brain problems.. as I understand it there are psilocybian/psilocinian receptors in the brain cells.. now why would evolution create a receptor for something that would destroy it anyways? Same with marijuana as well. But this is the only thing that worries me with shrooms, seems almost too good to be true. I've tripped numerous times but after my last bad one I'm hesitant and I want some reassurance as to whether or not they are at all harmful, someone must know something kn the subject, not just what they think.. because frankly, I'm not interested in opinions.

Mushrooms will not harm you physically. Aspirin is considerably more toxic than psilocybin. However if you have a latent or pre-existing mental disorder (ex,schizophrenia), mushrooms can cause serious psychological problems. As you have already tripped mushrooms several times I think you are good to go. Happy tripping

Have you read the forum guidelines?

This is a FAQ:
http://shroomery.org/index/par/24316

There are no know compounds in Psilocybian mushrooms which have long-term negative physical health effects.

Those are two completely different questions.

Ask him yourself, I don't think he'd mind.

Mushrooms can cause problems if you have a severely bad experience.

If you've had a bad experience, be extremely careful on the next one. It could be even worse.

well i mean, its obvious that people who condone mushroom use would be quick to say they cause no harm, much like those who use marijuana. But, I have read the FAQ's and such, i was jsut wondering if there wsa conclusive evidence

Physically they don't damage any organ in your body.

Doing them very often can make people really fucking weird... I'd strongly advise against it.

Moderation is always key. Moderation shouldn't cause any problems.

There is not much research done on this topic because it is not easy to do and is very expensive. But there also is no reason to assume that they are bad.

I agree that people who condone mushroom use would be quick to say they cause no harm, but you can go to the DEA site or any anti drug site and see that they don't provide any research that shows that psilocybian mushroom use causes long-term physical health effects.

Research:

"Psilocybin affects core dimensions of altered states of consciousness and physiological parameters in a dose-dependent manner. Our study provided no cause for concern that Psilocybin is hazardous with respect to somatic health" - Acute psychological and physiological effects of psilocybin in healthy humans: a double-blind, placebo-controlled dose-effect study; Hasler F , Grimberg U, Benz MA, Huber T, Vollenweider FX [1]

"This drug is not associated with physical or psychological dependency, acute toxicity is largely limited to possible panic and anxiety attacks and, in terms of chronic toxicity, the worst that can happen are flashbacks. Consequently, the use of paddos (hallucinogenic mushrooms) does not, on balance, present any risk to the health of the individual" - Risk Assessment by CAM (Coordination Centre for the Assessment and Monitoring of New Drugs), 2000. Oh, and the brain doesn't have psilocybin receptors.

I believe what happens, in basically when you eat mushrooms, the psilocybin converts to psilocin. You know how your brain receives serotonin through the serotonin receptors? Well basically the serotonin is replaced by psilocin.

A comparison of serotonin and psilocin

As you can see, they're very similar.

Once the psilocin is done, the brain eventually goes back to normal.

i think the only true danger of mushrooms (if you have no dormant mental disorders in the first place) is finding god and realising that 'all this' doesn't matter so much after all. but that's not all that bad, is it?

If you trip mushrooms every day for a a week or 2, you can have lasting psychological effects. This happened to a friend of mine, ate shrooms for a weak straight, and went into a state we call "perma-tripping". Sounds kinda cool but it really isnt.

Understand everyone reacts differently to substances, what might be the case for an individual, might not be for others.

--------------------

Got a question about a substance?  Erowid might already have your answer! Have questions about the  mushroom experience? The  Tripper's FAQ may have your answer or someone else might have had your question before.

exactly. good point.
My brother tripped for a week straight and didnt have lasting effects. But that doesnt mean that he couldnt have developed perma-tripping had he continued.

Can you say perma? Have you looked into the future?
My point is, it may fade or lessen with time. Time is a key thing.

Not sure exactly, the best way to explain it is when psilocin is constantly put in place of seratonin for a long period of time, the brain will eventually start producing psilocin instead of seratonin (there is no scientific basis to this theory, thats just the best way to explain the "perma-tripping" phenomenon).
