are filters for pumps 100 % necesary!!!!!!!!!!
    #4182138 - 05/16/05 12:26 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

hello again,, my quiestion is regarding filters for pumps..
i plan to use one air pump for my fruiting terrerium and ive read that a lot of people use filters or hepa filters, etc for their pumps,
i really dont plan to use one but the last few posts that ive read and really worring me..( might just end up useing a filter for my pump) but anyays, i plan to grow in a basement (a little cold, but i plan to use a 300 watts heater)
and its not very clean, organized but not clean... so my question is
are there chances that the pump might take contams from out side the terrerium and pleace them inside with my cakes????? i guess this is why eeveryione uses filters for their pumps, but is it 100000000%%%% necesary???????? what are my chances of getting contams....??

I like to use a filter disc on my air pump.

mainly because my grow room is in my furnace room.

and I'm sorta anal about getting clean air into my green houses.

putting a filter disc onto the bottom of a air pump isn't that hard.

take the rubber bottom off...put the filter disc where the bottom was.
put the rubber bottom on what was the top...so the air pump doesn't move around.
and duct taping the whole thing up along the sides.

and I can sleep better at night...knowing that my little friends are breathing better.

Roadkill, the filter material you use is HEPA standard i assume? where can we purchase it? i've tried Froogle but all it comes up with is the big air purifiers themselves.

the place that I used to purchase my filter discs is closed now.

several of the Shroomery Vendors carry the filter discs.

myco supply and Spore Works...I believe.

Oh yeah, I use a pump that has a built in dust filter. No HEPA or anything. I don't seem to have a lot of contam issues. I had a few battles with cobweb for a bit, but there were many other factors that lead to that contamination.

I don't think a filter is absolutely neccessary. If you are worried about it, just buy a pump with the built in filter for like a dollar extra...

The profile 5500 (which magash uses in his PMP) can be purchased from petco.com and it comes with an inbuilt filter, don't think its HEPA but its better than nothing. replacements are 4 for a dollar
