Drying mushrooms on a road trip, please help...

Hello all, *This is all hypothetical and ficticious.
Hypothetically Someone I know is fortunate enough that they will be taking a road trip with some good mates from Minnesota down through Georgia and finally to Florida some time in July.
I wasnt sure where to post this, but this seemed to be the best place.
They plan to do a stupendous amount of mushroom hunting while down there, both GA and FL, thats kind of a huge motivation for these destinations.
My predicament/question is as follows: They will most likely be hopping from hotel to hotel in Florida. They would appreciate it very much if ya'll could recommend the most superior way to dry the mushrooms for preservation on the Journey Home. Keep in mind that while down there the car will be very hot and They would not wish to degrade the potency anymore than is absolutely neccessary under the given circumstances. They have read in to dessicants a bit and are leaning towards them right now. They have not checked in to dehyrdrators but would be willing to put forth the money, as mushrooms, especially good ones are hard to come by here in MN and you dont know where theyve been. Anyways, They would be most interested in finding ways to get these things dry, preferably during the time spent in the hotel rooms where the temps will remain moderate and not sweltering as in the car.
*Please do not flame them for attempting to transport large quantities of Mushrooms across many state lines over about 1300 miles. They understand the risk, They have some experience in those matters, so Unless you think it's something they really should know, please, no need for bad vibes.
I appreciate any help or advice or constructive criticism. Hope you all enjoy the coming season.

Why would you say such a thing. He stated "They would appreciate it very much if ya'll could recommend the most superior way to dry the mushrooms for preservation on the Journey Home." Everyone knows a food dehydrator is best for this.

because i didn't read his post very carefully
anyway, it's only slightly more versatile in that in case they are NOT in hotel rooms when they need to dry they can still achieve -some- drying
reading it again, you're probably right, sorry.

I'd say, I hope you know One mushroom from the next and no, not all mushrooms that bruise blue are OK to eat, Yea, you'll probably Die if you don't know what you're doing and i'd say...go for the dehydrator...Way more efficent...

I would also suggest getting a dehydrator, but make sure you dry them until they are cracker dry. This will take several hours. Then seal them as air tight as possible in a ziplock, or if possible a vaccum sealer would be even better.
Then put them in a waterproof container inside a cooler with ice during the trip. When you get back, you should have some well preserved shroomies.
But I also agree with Gnostic on making for damn sure you know what mushrooms you are picking. Make sure you bring a camera to get some pics before you pick them. People on this site can really help with ID if you have some visual proof. Dried up shrooms are not as easy to tell.

if it were me i would get a cooler like a six pack cooler and a tuperware container that fits in and leaves a lil room and get some freezer packs to put in the cooler to keep it cool (not ice due to the extra moisture as it melts) and go to your local wal-mart or whatnot and get some damp rid and a wire rack like a cooling rack for kookies from like the dollar store or walmart put about a 1" layer of damp rid on the bottom of your tuperware container and then bend the cooling rack so it is above/not touching the damp rid. and every night when u go to the hotel if it has a fridge put the freezer pack in the freezer for the next day, or just buy a cooler that plugs into the cigeret lighter. but if u find some big fat juicy mushies cut them down the middle to speed up drying time.
-------------------- I am not lost.. i am going there looking for it.. and when i get there and find it, i will know what it is.. "The way to stop violence is not to go out and let your head be beaten in but to say, you want to take my life risk yours!" "are you sure u want to eat all them shrooms??" "yes i want to hear what my mind has to say..." remember opions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink.

A box fan always dries mine up real fast but nothing like 2 hours so go with the dehydrator if you can afford it

I would get dissicant and a dehydrater. It seems like they are going to get alot, so while some mushies are in the dehydrater put the other ones over the dissicant. Also Get a car adapter so you can dry on the go.

Which is why we dont turn the heat off.
Get a dehydrator to use at the hotels and a small rubbermaid with desiccant, or a bunch of coffee filters filled with desiccant for when your traveling. Dehydrator will dry shrooms quick as hell though so the desiccant will just be for back up in case you dont have the 4-16 hours to wait around.

i would hardly reccomend using a dehydrator on the road. watch out even when you're dehydrating in the hotel, too. when you have an amer. harvest with the minimum tray capacity packed, it will make an entire apartment reak like fungus. incense will help.
is your trip for the sole purpose of hunting? if so, i hope you guys don't dissapoint yourselves.

>it will make an entire apartment reak like fungus.
If you stick it in a closet, 1 foot from the door wont smell like fungus, even with half a pound (dry, which would be 5 pounds wet and 4 times the minimum tray capacity) on it.
