The ideal casing mixture
    #4176759 - 05/15/05 12:04 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

i'm going to colonize 40-45 cakes this summer, i've never done a casing before so i'm just going to do the basic 'pf casing method'.

what mix would you guys recommend? they say 1/2 peat 1/2 verm, then oyster shell for ph levels i'm assuming...but i've read so many other mixture methods saying that one has more nutrients for the mushrooms than the other one. is peat a good base to use? what about this coco coir? from what i've been reading, vermiculite is standard in most any, and thats no problem becauase i'm familair with the material. i'm just wondering what combinations you all have had best results with.

another thing, about the perlite. i thought it wasn't good to grow out mushrooms on direct perlite? at least i've read this so far - contamination problems and things already in the perlite which shouldn't contact the fruits. but this method says to layer the bottom of the tray and then crumble the cakes right on top. i also don't see how this would help the humidity if the perlite is burried beneath the casing mix and mycelium. shouldn't the perlite be outside of the tray in a chamber of some sort? if not, then what is the point of a fruiting chamber really if you can just line the bottom with perlite?

i just like to talk through these questions as i go, i'm somewhat new to this.

i also think i'm going to try complete sterilization of everything in the microwave, it just seems easier. hmm, can glass go in the microwave

I am not a cake guy. But the best bulk casing mix I have found/used is:

40% peat (ph adjusted to 7.5/ 8), 40% chunky verm & 20% coir.

I like a peat/verm/coir mix as well with a little limestone flour and a pinch of oyster shell flour.

I've seen great results with 50/50 coir/vermiculite in the past.

yes.

Good luck

do you use all three options because each have nutrients which the others don't to feed the mushrooms? it makes sense if so.

what do you usually use to keep the ph level neutral, oysters?

I use calcium carbonate...But i'd use w/e Agar suggests IMO.

And The casing layer is there to provide moisture ONLY, not nutrients...You want allll the nutes to be in the Substrate...

is the limestone and oyster shell to just level the ph, or do they serve another cause.

wait, isn't the casing layer and the substrate the same thing. the verm is the substrate initially, but in the casing layer it's also included which is in combination with other things, right? so they're sort of the same aren't they

No...The Casing layer can be...let's say Coir and Verm..Coir is Airy and Verm. holds moisture, so it's not a bad choice for a Casing mix...
Casing mixes are there to provide moisture to the substrate...

The substrate has All the Nute in it...Here's some substrates..

*Note, Verm. in a sub. mix is to provide MOISTURE RETENTION NOT NUTES*

- Verm/Brown rice flour (Brf)
- Rye/verm.
- Corn/Verm.
- WBS/verm..

Grains usually don't hold water well, so adding some verm. can help aid them in that particular area..

I can't believe No one posted this before me lol..

Make sense now?

No. The substrate would be the nutrious material your growing the mycelium out on. IE Rye, wild bird seed, brown rice flour/vermiculite.

When the substrate is fully colonized, to case it, you would break it up into a tray and cover it with a 1/4"-1/2" layer of casing material.

Read everything here.

hmm, ok then.

what about the perlite, the pf casing tek says to layer the bottom of the trays with perlite and crumble the substrate over-top, then to add the casing layer atop that  :stoned:

i've read it isn't good to grow directly on perlite, and how would this help with humidity unless it was in a fruiting chamber?  or does it have to be in a fruiting chamber and that is just implied - something covering the tray to hold in moisture.

when i fruited cakes i put them on their lids inside a tupperware container, and layered the bottom with perlite. in this scenario i can see how the perlite would help with humidity - holding the pockets of water and what not. but if the perlite is buried beneath the mycelium how can it do it's purpose?

also wouldn't the perlite suck up a hellalot of water just lounging beneath the mycelium?

I wouldn't put perlite in the bottom of a casing. Some wet vermiculite maybe.
I think perlite would be a contam risk.
For cakes it would be ok.

Just crumble the substrate into the tray and add a casing layer on top. Then incubate for a couple days if you want then stick into terrarium.
