Initiating Pinning On Casings
    #4143612 - 05/06/05 06:23 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, AFOAF used the PFTek to get some cakes going. Do to time constraints, the cakes were about 2 weeks past 100% colonization before casing. He didn't dunk the cakes before he cased (mistake #1). It was cased with a mix of peat/verm/coir with hydrated lime and crushed/powdered oyster shell to pull the pH up to about 7.5 using a pH meter.

Casings were incubated at ~82 degrees for 2-3 days until myc started poking up. They were patched then left 1 more day to incubate. They were then cold shocked in the fridge for about 4-5 hours or so (mistake #2, should have went 12+).

They were then birthed into a fruiting chamber. Cool mist is going 24/7 and keeping humidity between 82-94% humidity. The big problem is the temp. The fruiting chamber is in a room where the outside temp dictates the inside temp. From the time of fruiting the temp has varied between 54-89 degrees. (major fuck up here).

The casings have been in the fruiting chamber roughly 12-16 days (different birthings) and show no signs of pinning. Casings were semi-neglected, only misted occassionally and kept below saturation and air exchange hasn't been kept very consistent (mistakes #4&5). One casing showed noticeable hyphae within 3-4 days of birthing but has produced zero pins. Two cakes which began to pin invitro were also birthed into the same fruiting chamber as not to waste them. One has completely abhorted. The other is growing VERY slowly, maybe 1 inch pins after 7+ days of growing.

What can be done to save the casings and initiate pinning? He is introducing a hepa filtered air purifier to the chamber today to get constant air flow. Anything else?

One casing is fully of hyphae (kinda shrank during a misting though)
Once casing is showing about 50% myc colonization on the surface with no hyphae (repatch?)
Couple of other casings are showing a few myc spots on top, not many.

Should he mist the casings showing myc? Dropping the temp isn't that easy but he is working on stabilizing it in the low 70's.

He has several quarts of WBS at 2-3 days past 100% that need the fruiting chamber. Should he move the casings to an outdoor bed and hope for the best? or is there still hope that they have not completely abhorted and will still produce?

No pics available.

Oh, and the room is exposed to natural light. No direct sunlight on the fruiting chamber but it gets indirect sunlight on a normal day/night cycle. Should direct artificial light be introduced?

Bump. Was wanting to find a solution soon. I think once air exchange is fixed it may fix the problem. Balancing the temp may be easier once there is air flow in there, will bring it down from the 80s atleast.

repatch the one showing 50%... how is your fresh air exchange?? it's a must.
fan about 3-4 times a day..

find some way to stabilize the temps in the chamber.. 72F was optimal but your situation may differ.

TiT is great for smaller fruiting chambers, look into it.

stop misting the casings until they pin, or look a little dry.

good luck with your grow.  :sun:

That is what I was wondering. I figured I would atleast get some type of comment. I think I have isolated all the problems, I am just hoping the entire set of casings haven't completely abhorted yet.

Too much text. People open the thread and say "Fuck that! *click*

I would suggest putting it more concisely or putting it in number/point form.

Sorry i am not offering any help about the actual problem, its just more than i'm willing to read right now.
