answers spawning more questions (casing/poo/pasteurizing...)

so my first attempt at actual cultivation had yielded 0% contamination and a decent amount of mushrooms for a first attempt. both in cakes and with casings. so naturally i'd like to take it a little further.
i'm gearing to step up production with a bulk poo/straw tek. and i finally found out why we pasteurize the poo instead of sterilize it. but it said that if you introduce any other nutrient-rich additive to the substrate (aside from the grain the spawn was grown on) you have to sterilize it; suddenly the ability of the good bacteria in the poo are not enough to help fend off other organisms. is this really true?
i didnt decide to go this route until recently, and i've already got 15 more cakes brewing in various stages of completion, but they all are verm/BRF; however the poo teks tell me to use either WBS or rye for the initial substrate...is there any harm in trying it with brf cakes? or should i use the brf cakes to colonize larger amounts of either WBS or rye?
my other question is that the bulk poo teks i've read about mostly dont include a casing layer. is it necessary/a good idea to have it, or does the poo itself do a good enough job to not warrant it?
any (solid) advice is welcome...

He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

If you go without a casing layer, be prepared to provide 95%+ relative humidity. Bucket/cake environment required. A casing layer is preferred because of lower RH requirements, and sustained moisture deliver to the substrate over time. Poo can be fruited w/out a casing layer, but be ready for what I mentioned:

the bulk neglect tek is one i've been eyeing lately. it involves a "spawn run" before the casing is applied. how necessary is this step? i'm a little concerned about contaminants during this stage, although the author states the boxes were left in a "well used closet" and i've read that horse poo is reasonably resistant to contams...
