STORE BOUGHT BAGGED MANURE & "SO CALLED" COMPOST: * 1
    #4054593 - 04/14/05 12:07 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

STORE BOUGHT BAGGED MANURE & "SO CALLED" COMPOST:

Because store bought manure, and/or so called compost is made from whatever suitable inexpensive organic material that readily available in large quantities locally, the content of which varies from region to region. Meaning, what is available for purchase where you are, will not be the same as what is available elsewhere (even if it is advertised as the same product, and national brand name).

Straight bagged manure is just that, dried steer/cow manure (most often from feedlots & dairies). It is not composted, as that process is expensive, equipment & time intensive. This type bagged manure most often contains high levels of salts, antibiotic?s, insecticides & fungicides. All of which are detrimental to mushroom production.

So called store bought composts are not actually "composted", nor contain anything close to what an actual "mushroom" compost would. Store bought composts most often contain mixtures of steer/cow manure, and "forest products".

Forest products generally consist of ground tree bark, sawdust, wood shavings & wood pulp wastes. These ingredients are simply sun dried, mixed, run through a shredder/chipper device, then bagged up for retail sale. The manure used is not optimal, and in combination with "forest products" is far less than optimal as a mushroom substrate.

Click the link below. It explains what the basic content of true mushroom substrate compost consists of & how it is made.http://mushroomspawn.cas.psu.edu/Preparation.htm

Take NOTE, no store bought bagged manure or so called compost is made of, nor anything even close to what actual mushroom substrates require, nor are actually composted.

don't use compost or manure and you'll be good. you should only use WBS and wheat straw. it's really that simple.

No it is not. WBS as a substrate is far less than optimal.

I wish you & your substrate well.

Ponder many before you have tried the same. Most failed, otherwise you would not see vendors here selling h/poo or compost substrates. There would no market, if $1.99 Walmart - KMart - HomeDepot bagged shit was better, as good, or even came close.

Sometimes you get LUCKY. I prefer consistancy, rather than the luck of the draw.

Did my last post have an impact on this thread Agar? Your right on the information. I'm just saying some people that don't have easy access to a field can use bagged as an alternative. Not optimal, but an alternative.

Rye most often fruits out better than WBS. Best cheap substrate is weathered h/poo, if you have access to some.

125 lbs of prime h/poo that was free for the loading.

RESULTS

  Not hardly.  Straw sucks the big one in my opinion, and besides, it's a contamination time bomb just waiting to go off.  Welcome to the boards.

Less than optimal as it sounds more like dirt - than compost, but if you mixed it 50/50 with fine chopped wheat straw & a little coir/verm in the mix... it would/should do pretty darn good.

I feel were your commin from Agar. But here's some results from bagged poo, (although from poultry) 3 1/3 dry ounces from 1, 28qt tray cased with Sunshine/verm. Not too shabby IMO. Actually, 3 5/8's.

Ya can't complain about that nice crop.

Must have been composted a lot & I assume you added chopped straw. As most poultry poo (alone)is so hot, it will toast myc.

Yep. Chopped straw/coir/poo/coffee and a heck of a lot of lime pasturization. I lost 2 out of the 8 though. I've got a pretty good tek on how to pull it off. We'll see next round. Thanks!

Really, I feel you can complain,or hope for better or improvement , with just about anything. Agar, what would be better then a 124 gram mushie? 134,144. That's what I love about this hobby. Your best flush is only that until your next possible better flush. Like Christmas every time you get a pinset.
