selling medicinals / edibles to health food stores - viable idea ?
    #4051490 - 04/13/05 04:54 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

hey!

so, i just came up with an idea about selling 'fancy' medicinal mushrooms to health food stores.

take this for an example.

many people frequenting health food stores buy there because they know that their grains for example,
are organic and never ever even seen a fungicide in their life.
so they are willing to pay more for it b/c its just natural and will do good for them.

so, these people also often buy some strange teas youv never heard of or some extremely overpriced tofu or whatever.

given that these customoers would be offered a variety of 'fancy' mushrooms such as reishi,
that jsut by their looks appear so strange and alien that they simply MUST BE HEALTHY and also taste
so incredibly shitty as a tea that it basically doubles their healthyness for them heh,
that they would be willing to pay quite some for those mush.

basically what my idea was and is, to use the very limited space of a martha to, for example, gow blocks
of reishi, maybe use another martha for shii/mai/ekinotake or alike and basically supply this little but
present group of customers.

also another target could be TEMPEH or KOMBUCHA and alike..

a question on the side would be if homemade tofu is possible and if so, how?
well, would you think that an individual can produce AND sell enuf to get a little cash on the side?

love your ideas on it,
besides the fact that, bringin it down to the facts, anyone can grow cubensis and i must admit
that during cultivation time, they got a bit old and im up for new exciting adventures

peace ohm :mushroom2:

Being a consumer of said overpriced commodities, I think it could work if they were dried and sold as bulk herbs. It would be more to your benefit if you had a line of products to market and advertise (teas, dried bulk, caplets, etc...) Most of us health nuts, even the most extreme versions, won't want to dry the mushroom , grind it, cap it, eat it raw or make tea from it. I've purchased mushroom caps for exhorbitant amounts for certain chronic conditions and they did nothing for me that I could ascertain. There must be a market for them though because good quality commercial mushroom caps can go for as much as 30.00 for a months supply in some of these health food stores. The most I payed was around 15.00, on sale, but the average is between 15-25 for a month's supply of caps.

Amongst those in the herbal know, and the most idealistic, there is high demand for good quality herbal/health products that are cultivated "properly". This means certified organic, vegan, harvested kosher and prayed over by tibetan monks for thirty days.

kidding...kind of.

Anyway, You might be on to something.

viable, but needs to be handles in a delicate manners i'd say...
one word, certification...
those health food stores you are talking about, depending on your area, most likely wont take mushrooms, fresh or dried, from you unless you have some sort of legitimate backing for them..
ie, a farm or some sort of business setup.
kombucha, tofu, tempeh.. all these are nice, but you would need a certified kitchen to sell them, definetly...
thats a pretty big deal, and investment..
its worth it! people are making their living off these products you are talking about.. but you can't just half-ass something and expect it to really work for you..
you need to give it everything you have to make it work
now, there are *SOME* small-time health food stores that wont need certification or anything to sell your stuff, this is a great way for small time places to get started.. i have yet to see any places like this except where i live, in vermont..
there is also the internet market..
now say for example you grew a bunch of medicinal mushrooms and dried them... you can easily setup something on ebay or something selling your products..
it seems things on the net are a bit less watched over..
people get away with all kinds of stuff..
but it is borderline really..
if you want to really do it, and IT CAN WORK, you just need to look at it from a really professional manner, its a business and a way of life.. but its real, and its out there..

good luck!

You're right man, certification is key for expansion. Being a certified organic farm is no easy task. That's the only issue I can see being somewhat difficult at first. I know that for plant crops to be labeled and certified the growing conditions must be pesticide and chemical free for X number of years. Not to mention, you have to show proof of your growing procedure meeting said standards as well. Although it might be easier for mushrooms because your not buying a farm and converting it to organic. You would have complete and immediate control over substrates, growth mediums, nutrients and all the other variables.

Ohm, don't just stop at the health food stores.  I used to grow portabellas and had them coming out of my ears for a while.  I ended up selling them to this guy who owned a chinese restaraunt.  I sold them to him for a little over a year until I stopped growing ports.... gl bro :stoned:
