Dunk those bulk subs! (Wow)

A quick, contam resistant method to rehydrate your bulk subs, and get some sweet future flushes, and no messing with a casing layer. I'm seeing some REALLY impressive numbers on first, second, third, and consecutive flushes using this technique.
Think: Dunk + roll on a larger scale.
Clean all aborts and abnormalities with a clean knife. Submerge in clean water for 4 hours. (Notice the gapping as bulk sub loses mass)
Drain the water, and pour in dry verm, making sure to put a layer on bottom as well. Fill in all cavities and smooth off the top.
Put back in fruiting tub, lightly mist, and wait. That's it. Here's a 3rd flush shot:
The point of this is: Beautiful flushes are possible without fancy casing layers or optimal conditions. Just keep your substrate hydrated, provide a climate for pins to form, and the rest falls into place.

Whoops, I forgot to add that part, thanks Ohmatic.
Top layer of verm should be no more than what adheres to the bulk surface after being poured on. I.E., no excess, around or less than 1/8".
The idea isn't to give the mycelium something to colonize (which it doesn't in this case) just a micro environment for pins to form.

definitely a great technique i was just beginning to think that there had to be a better way of rehydrating. glad you posted this morning.
and you have holes already made for drainage?

would almost make me think that you remove it, maybe i'm misinterpreting, though.

psilocyben, no drainage. Yep, you gotta pick it up and remove it to put the bottom verm layer down.
The substrate is pretty tough, you can handle it and take it out of the casing without trouble (within limits).

this is interesting. the bulk straw beds i did were pretty spongy and soft after the dunk, one larger one even broke into half on me :/ never did poopoo only though so i dunno. peace ohm

I gotta learn how to do this bulk stuff!! That 3rd flush looks great! I have done some casings, but they contamed on me. I am waiting until we get our new house before I do any stuff like that, though. I am going to get a HEPA and make me a 'clean' room out of a closet. Anyway, nice tek, Diver!

You said "Clean all aborts and abnormalities with a clean knife." What about hyphal knots? would it be better to get rid of any that didn't pin and let it start over completely?
For this run I cleaned off everything from the top, including hyphal knots. Turned out great, no two pinsets were ever the same, and flushes came in strong regardless.
I have to stress "light" cleaning though, no super deep scratching or anything. Just enough to remove old growth.

Bulk sub's kick the white out of cakes. H/poo is the best, most common & inexpensive.

>as u use dry verm i wonder how the myc eats thrhough it
Dont forget, you just dunked the casing so its soaked...the dry verm will suck up that water..then you mist a little to get it up to par. This whole thing is bascially what I do, but casing mix instaed of verm, and instead of pouring it on, it gets spooned on. Add it quite a bit dry though to soak up extra water all over and then mist to correct water content.
>the bulk straw beds i did were pretty spongy and soft after the dunk It probably wasnt compacted as much as it could be then? Mine are pretty solid, though one that was looser did crack and almost break on me. I cover the straw with plastic after I spawn and use my fists and all my body weight to push it down as hard as I can though. Or I use shreaded straw which doesnt need as much pressing and stays together even better.

How long do you dunk your poo casings for? And do you put peroxide in your water or just used bottled or tap?
Edit: scatmanrav, so you're talking about straw only? Regardless, what kind of water do you use?

I havnt gotton my first flush off poo yet so no dunk...I'm not sure if I'm gonna dunk it or not.....I may dunk one to try it. I was talking of straw, rye, and WBS since I've dunked those many a time. Straw specifially when I was talking of packing it down though, thats the only substrate you should do that with.
I use tap because I have one of them sprayers...works good for washing off all the old spores and the casing mix thats loose and almost lightly "scratches" the surface from the water pressure. Ten add a bit of peroxide in the sides, cover with foil and let it sit for 2-12 hours, depending.

Thanks guys. So with bulk subs, when you clean the first casing layer off, it's all right to scrape off any knots/pins/aborts before dunking? And one might see a little bluing where the knots and pins come away from the colonized substrate?

I dont scrape anything away like that. I remove all aborts and mature fruits, not primordia and pins though. Thats just me though. You definatly may see bluing at any point the substrate is disturbed in a anyway..
