Can I use my cooker with a hotplate?
    #4029379 - 04/08/05 01:17 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I am looking to move in to a new place, a studio close to waikiki beach. Since I am looking at studios, I will not have a kitchen. Will a hot plate be able to get hot enough to use my pressure cooker with? (the 8q mirro) or do I really need a stove?

Searched the forum, but couldn't find anyone talking about using a hot plate. Anyone have any good or bad news on this topic?

thanks

No, it probably can't get that hot - if its just a hotplate. If its a REALLY nice one you could get it to boil. You might look into a microwave or some camping equip thats gas powered.

If your temps were high enough to get a PC to 15 PSI - all the plates I have seen would be waaaay too flimsy to support the weight and the agitation caused by the rocking a fully loaded PC.

Again, there could be some super - delux hotplate 2000 out there I don't know about. GL.

if you get a good hotplate, you could use it. my father back in the day, when he was alive, used to be ghetto, and used hotplates in a hotel he lived in for a few years, and we always boiled water and whatnot.

Try finding a small gas stove, at a camping surplus store or something. It will definatly get hot enough.

depends on the power. if it is above 600W you should be able to boil at room temp of 16C.

I use a hotplate for PC'n... I have two different ones, the single burner I bought for the job couldn't cut it.. I had an older two burner one that did.. You really need a good one, even this one I definetly notice it takes more time then on the good ole stove.. gas burner would be your best bet and the way I am going to go asap..

What you need is this kind of hot plate:

Lab style...Thermodyne 1900. Check ebay..that one was had for about 40 bucks to my door.

These will go up to 300 degrees (Celcius) so they'll be plenty for PCing, or heating up huge amounts of water for pasteurizing. Those kind that look like stove burners, I hear are shit...I havnt tried one because I was told not to bother..VERY glad I bought this thing.

Do you sit your PC on both burners?

Do you put anything between the PC and the burners??

A hotplate will work, you will just need to wait alot longer for the hotplate to make the PC boil and get hot enough for 15 psi.

I have a small, $8 hotplate from Wally World, and I was able to simmer a big pot of rye and pressure cook 12 1/2pint jars with it.

Yeah, I use a 1500w hotplate for my pc, takes a while to get up to temp but it does it gradually so you don't really need to worry to much about rasing the temps to fast

i don't think this is a hotplate.... but just an electric burner. works just like the burners on the stove.

What a weird thing, I haven't ever seen a hotplate unable to boil a pot of water. Probably, it is because we have 220 volts in electric sockets.
