Georgia is finally alive. Morels and Pan subbs (PICS!)

Bout damn time. After a very harsh winter (high temps in the 20s for 2 weeks) the Morel and Pan subb season has finally started. I've been checking my morel patch every weekend for the past month, and I finally found some.
Here's one way to tell if the morels should be fruiting. I've been hunting them for about 3 years and I've noticed that they never fruit until the fiddle-heads are up. fiddle heads are immature ferns, I snapped a shot of them so you know what to look for:
Another sign that they are up, look for cup fungus. These always fruit near morels and at the same time as morels:
Here's some pics of the actual morels. I only found one tiny one today, but found 5 yesterday. For an idea of how small this one was, I put a regular lighter next to it in the second shot.
Here's the morels I found yesterday, biggest one is maybe 3 inches tall:
So those are the morels.
Here's a shot of the first active mushroom I've found in 2005:
And something really random... I found a fishhead in the bushes about 10 feet from a TINY creek. The creek is maybe 5 feet wide, but this was a decent sized bass head. My best guess is someone caught it in the pond up stream, cleaned it, threw it back in the pond, and it made it's way down here and some animal dragged it out... anyway... here's a dead fish:

Oh yeah, I seem to get the question every year that is somewhere along the lines of:
"Will morels fuk u up man?"
No. We don't only look for actives in these forums. There are a lot of avid edible mushroom hunters here. Morels are simply the best edible mushroom around. No psychoactive effects, just tastes awesome.
Also, the active mushroom is Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Yeah, I've read reports that the Morels are up in SC. They tend to grow near poplar, cottonwood, ash, and elm trees that are close to bodies of water.
DH: I think they're the same morels you guys find. I'm guessing they're M. esculenta. I think they're just a bit water logged, we've had something like 4 inches of rain in the past 2 days.

those dark conical ones aren't what I would call m. esculenta, they resemble m. elata more to me. but morel taxonomy is all weird anyway. we have many different forms up here, m. esculenta seems to only be common after floods and stuff, elata are found in burnsites and up in the pine forests usually, but sometimes I find a few in the same kind of areas as esculenta and semilibera, I just find it kind of interesting how the ranges overlap and stuff.
they're all good though

Very nice indeed!
I still have yet to find morels
They're quite rare where I live but luckily I have access to our governments biodiversity database to find locations where they grow if I ask nicely

I'd love to find some semilibras but I don't think they grow in the southeast. LK and I might go hunting this weekend and try to find some new spots, pics to come for sure if we do end up going.

Maybe it's coz i'm from aus but i've never heard of a morel. Do they taste like boletus'? I think the subject of this thread should be: "And the morel of this story..." change it gumby! lol anyways nice finds, especially that fish.

Wewt, bling's got a camera! Bout time man!
Another observation from my nature nerd perspective: Fiddle heads just showed up and the Sweetgum Trees are just starting to produce leaflets. Sweetgum leaflets bear a small resemblance to pot, being that they have pointed leaves with serrated edges.
Good luck with the morel hunting. I hope to see pics of you people's finds.
As far as the oz guy goes, I'm not sure if morels grow in australia or not. If the do then I'd get out there and hunt them in the Spring(Augustish for you).
As far as the taste goes: imagine eating an orgasm. Seriously. Best taste you can ever get from a mushroom. Nothing like boletes. It's almost comparable to a meat taste, I guess. Perhaps other members can elaborate on the taste. It's the taste and texture of morels that make's them the best edible ever. Anyone care to elaborate?

i generally don't like the taste of edible mushrooms but from your description alone i guess i'll visit the local grocery store and pick some up if they're available. never had the pleasure of tasting a morel before

Cool finds Gumby, the tips about morel hunting are also very useful. And thanks for pointing out that some of us are into edibles or just plain fascinated with mushrooms in general.
