PF Style Jar (pic)
    #400020 - 09/21/01 01:35 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

This is my first attemp using PF Style jars (only rye thus far). I've heard that BRF gums up the sides of the jars, even when the moisture content is okay, and I've had some bad experiences with wet spot bacteria, so I was just making sure this looks about right... When the substrate was squeezed prior to boiling, there was no excess water released. 1 cup Verm, 1/2 cup BRF, 120cc's water per Pint Jar..

I realize the picture's a little grainy, but when all your cash goes into your setup, those good digital cams are a bit out of reach :)

Dude, it looks like what you need is a ramsey seal (basically just a layer of pure vermiculite where you have nothing. Thats crazy if you have pf style holes it's basically just exposed substrate.

This is how I do my jars, I just fill them up to the threads and do not use a dry vermiculite layer. I just work quickly and cleanly and never have a prob with contamination. Sometimes I dont even bother with holes and just unscrew the lid and quickly squirt 1 - 2cc around the edge of the jar and put the lid back. I do leave tape over my holes until about 70% colonization though.

Hmm.

My friend's land shark just finished his first batch. The Micron Magic disks were GREAT with finch seed.

However, on the BRF cakes the top 1/4" ended up too dry. The shark figured that the vermiculite layer was not needed if you are using filter disks. It is true that no contams appeared (24 perfect jars), but the vermiculite helps seal in moisture a bit.

If the shark ever does BRF cakes again, he will use the 1/4" vermic layer even if he has the disks. That said: birdseed + micron magic kicks ass! Much lower hassle than BRF cakes and much better growth.

These comments are based on the limited experience of a shark.
