I decided last year that I was going to learn to play a new instrument this year...somewhat of a new years resolution/goal or whatever. I know how to play the piano and the violin. Now I want to play the bass guitar. I'll buy one this month...and I'm gonna play the f**k out of it. I'm not sure of what type...brand...to buy. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I'll agree with that... Ibanez makes a nice bass.
Two of my friends own this one.. they both play awesome:

And it's fuckin' beautiful.

The Ibanez Soundgear is a good bass to start out with because it has a thin neck which makes it easier to play, and the strings are closer together. They also sound surprisingly well for how light they are. Some of the lower end models are very cheap, but they are still very good quality.

I play a higher end ibanez 5 string soundgear, the ibanez BTBs are also nice, but it depends how much money you wanna spend on a bass. Spector makes good ones as well. As far as a gibson bass, they're not as sought after like their guitars are, warwicks are one of the holy grails of mass produced basses.

'high-end ibanez'..isn't that like some kind of an oxymoron or something? just kidding..
Maybe it's just personal preference, but I swear by my Spector (European made ReBop 4 string)..you can't ever go wrong with a Spector. I'd be willing to bet even their more affordable performance/professional lines may even give some of the other more prominent companies higher end models a run for their money.

i'd have to agree with everyone here that an ibanez SoundGear is probably the best beginner's bass on the market. bass players are lucky in that there are many smaller manufacturers that kinda co-exist with each other once you are willing to pay a certain price. i play a 6 string Ken Smith bass. Some basses I have owned are: 5 string Pedulla, Yamaha 6 string Pattutucci (?sp?) model, 5 string MTD, 4 string 1964 Fender Jazz Bass, 5 string Elrick, 5 string Modulus..... maybe some more that i cant remember. i traded for most of my basses even money with other bass players i met on the road.
that said, my pride and joy is the 6 string Ken Smith. i play it through an Eden WorldTour800 with the 4x10 cabnet, but i want to upgrade to an Aguilar rig sometime before i die.

Thanks guys...I'm checking them out online right now.

I find that when I started the bass I could hardly tell the difference in sound as I didn't play about with the tone/pickups at all, mostly all I could tell was if it had more strings or if it looked purrddyy heh.
So all in all you can't really go wrong to start off with!

don't listen to them they are plugging ibanez :P
i would recommend a 2nd hand bass that has been setup nicely.. brands don't matter, good guitars come from everywhere i find. check for fret buzz first and try find one with a nice low action, it helps a lot
oh and you are going to have huge blisters for a month or 2 if that hasn't already been mentioned

Learn the acoustic guitar or electric guitar first man, I made the mistake of going straight to the bass, ended up with some crappy results. If you learn to play the acoustic, the bass would be as easy as fuck.
And I recommend this starter pack: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=bass/search/detail/base_pid/519677/?c_tid=topseller
Maybe you can try the bass violin hehe http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=bass/search/detail/base_pid/519677/?c_tid=topseller
