Should i put my dog to sleep?

my dogs, 'matches', is a mutt, its looks like a ridgeback/pit mix so he's kinda big. about 3 years old, he's always been a passive happy dog, but lately him and my little male terrier dog 'scrappy' have been at eachothers throat, the last time a few weeks ago, matches had scrappy by the throat, i picked matches up by the collar straight up and he still had scrappy in his jaws suspended in the air & wouldnt let go. scrappy used to be the bigger/dominant dog when matches was just a puppy, an now that matches is bigger/stronger/etc. scrappy makes it a point to growl at him & be all up in his face whenever they are around eachother.
just now, i heard my mom screaming so i jumped up, ran into the kitchen, matches ran out to the back yard when he seen me coming. what happened was he mawled our FEMALE terrier over food, leaving a nice 5 inch gash up her ripcage. this is the first time he's drawn blood and he did a pretty damn good job at it.
matches isnt nuetered, so thats the next step, but is it too late?

if getting him fixed doesn't subside his aggressive tendencies.. maybe you could find someone else that would want to take him?
it would suck to put him to sleep simply because he's the alpha male now or whatever.. i don't really know much about dogs but i know they are pretty fierce when it comes to their food. maybe he mistakenly thought your terrier was eating from his bowl?
i dunno, i just hate the idea of putting pets to sleep unless it's absolutely necessary..

sometimes, with big dogs, you just have to show them who's boss. next time he does something wrong, beat the shit out of him. I'm not kidding. I mean don't do damage, or hit him in the head or anything, but make him remember it. And for those of you about to reply and jump down my throat, think of the alternative of authanising the animal. If you make him fear you a bit, and respect you, maybe he'll stop misbehaving.

I hope that you don't have to put him to sleep, man. I had to put my lab down on my 24th birthday!! She had arthritis so bad that she couldn't get up! I would say try neutering. It is better than death.

yeah isn't that cos of their hierarchical instincts or something?
something about pack animals.. if you are its provider and you disapprove of something it does then just physically enforce your disapproval? there's definitely a fine line between abuse and discipline.. any decent person would know the difference.

yeah, exactly. I knwo 40 well enough to know he'd know where to draw the line. Give him a good smack on the ass, and scream in his face next time, and continue to punish him like that until he gets the point that this is not ok. God forbid your mom goes to change the food dish, and he decides to freak on her...you can't take that chance. Show the dog that behavior will not be tolerated.

yea man chops his balls off next time he does something wrong.. im saying you personally should chop his balls off. that would be the worst discapline he could have.but seriously, get a coffe can and fill it halfway with pennies. shake the shit out of the can next time he does something bad. if that doesnt work you might have to smack him... did you ever think of getting a muzzle for him?

Yes, a rolled up newspaper can do wonders, and it doesn't really hurt the dog. And try everything before you make such a drastic decision to put him down....

Pits are naturally agressive. My mother always liked having her own personal zoo of animals. If she saw a stray she took it home. So as far back as I can remember she always had aleast 4 dogs at a time. Thats not including the boa's, the turles, the fish, the frogs, the tarantulas, the cats, ect.. Out of all the dogs I can remember the only ones we had trouble with were the pitbulls. Right now she has a pitbull mix, a wolf mix, and a doberman mix. The pitbull killed one of her pomeranians about 6 years ago. I told her that I would put the pitbull down for her but she just cant do that. Its been agressive to every dog. Even if they are bigger and stronger then her. The only dogs I know that are like that are pitbulls. She had atleast 5 german shepards and none of them were as agressive as pitbulls. Pitbulls were breed for fighting. Also people dont understand that, especially with small dogs, you are the alpha male. You have to be there to protect and discipline them. If your out walking your dog in the park and somebody wants your pets to meet and their dog attacks yours and you let it happen then it wont have must trust with you. Anytime I walked my dogs I would have to beat off atleast 2 pitbulls a day because they wanted me to fight my dogs. Also my mother had her pitbull spayed when it was a puppy and its still violent. Id say get rid of it or put it down. Nuetering wont help. But its your dog so its up to you. If you think you can control him then keep him but most likely you wont be able too.

i agree, chop off his balls and when he is bad show him who is boss. if nothing happens don't put him down. give him to the spca or whatever local pet service you have around. i worked in a vet's office for a while, and there is nothing worse than putting down an animal for no reason, in fact many vets won't even consider it unless the animal has attacked a human with out provocation. especially since he is a 'happy, passive' three year old, there is still room for improvement!

Judge the deed not the breed. It's morons who go around saying that 'all pits are vicous' which give them a bad name. Between that and media hype - what hope has the breed got. They're not any more aggressive then any other breed - however - they do more damage if they get into an altercation.
Anyways.
For 40: Try neutering him - altho at this stage his testostrone is already rampant so it may not make a scrap of difference. You have to realise that he is now 3 and this is when entire males generally are in their prime and start realising they actually have balls. However it is worth a shot. If this doesn't work - you need to work out the pack order of your dogs and recognise that. ie) feed the alpha first, beta second etc. Watch for signals of aggression. 95% of the time dogs give off 101 signals before physical aggression happens. Watch for staring contests, tails suddenly up in the air, stock still posture. The key to managing aggression is aversion ie) stop it before it escalates. Don't leave out food for them to fight over or toys etc.
Keep collars on your dogs at all times - if a fight breaks out - slip your hand under the collar and twist - making like a figure 8 out of the collar. This basically chokes the dog into letting go. Once this has happened - hold the aggressor to the ground until he goes belly up in submission.
Lemme know how it goes. There are millions of ways to deal with this without having to put your dog down. Worse comes to worse you rehome him into a one dog household where he'll still be loved but not have to vie with others for attention.
