pop goes the scion

well, today i learned why it is sometimes neccessary to bevel your grafting stock.

i grafted a sulcorebutia to to a pachycereus a few days ago. today, i went to check on it and the graft had popped off because i didn't bevel the ribs of the stock.

here's what happened:

i had never grafted using a pachycereus or other thin-ribbed stock before. i grafted as i normally do. the stock and scion had great contact (#1). as the stock's wound dried, the flesh shrunk away from the skin quite a bit (the gray in #2), but the skin didn't shrink. it just curled in (red lines in the second drawing) and lifted the scion away from the stock.

oh well, a lesson has been learned when grafting, using thin ribbed stock. i'm glad i didn't try grafting a loph to it.

If you're worried about scions lifting away, you can leave several millimeters of just the central core and start beveling away beneath that.

It may look odd, but the scion will eventually grow to cover it all up.

I got the idea from the Hylocereus "degrafting" technique of cutting away everything but the central core and the roots.

Be sure to post some pics of your Sulcorebutia grafts when they start taking off. I will be trying Sulcorebutia rauschii on Pereskiopsis later this year.
