lying about eduction on resumes
    #3968906 - 03/25/05 01:29 PM (19 years, 7 days ago)

I have a friend who has dropped out of college due to financial trouble among other things. He is currently applying to a few jobs here and there with a doctored resume - he says he completed college. Of course, there are dangers involved and I pointed this out, but he said he is desperate for a decent job and willing to take the chance. "What is the worst that can happen?"

He reminded me of mutual friend of ours that we went to college with who dropped out his last semester. He told his current employer that he did finish and is now a valuable member of the company (some advert. firm). He has job security because of his status and gained experience.

Besides the obvious repercussions (being fired down the road if they ever find out), what other problems will my friend face?

How often do employers actually check to see if a degree has been completed? Exactly how common is this?

Just curious.

It's not common for smaller companies and lower positions.
I don't know about the legal issues.

well, obviously minimum wage jobs do not check, but what about something higher paying? Something like an office job that pays, say, $16 an hour (thats what he's looking for)? Do they even check?

Probably not, when I say BIG companies, I mean nation-wide and for higher exec. positions, let's say a magazine, or BAYER, or a teleivision station, Wal-Mart, etc....

Did he recently drop out, or has he been out of school for several years? He could just put his college as 2001-present, or something like that. Just the fact that you're pursuing a degree (or that they think so) is a big bonus.

I wouldn't lie about something that is so easy to check as a college transcript. I had mine checked when I was an hourly temp worker! There is also the part that you usually sign on your application saying that everything above is accurate to the best of your knowledge, and depending on what the rest of that paragraph says, he can either be fired or even have legally pressed charges on him!

Always best not to lie. If he doesn't have the education, tilt the resume towards experience. Never lie.

Most companies don't check unless you give them a reason to.
