Corn vs. Popcorn
    #3955444 - 03/22/05 06:53 PM (19 years, 29 days ago)

Well, I posted a question a while back about using feed corn as opposed to popcorn. Mainly due to the fact that corn is about $5 for 100 lbs of the stuff. Someone suggested that I experiment and report back, so here goes..

3 pint jars of popcorn
3 pint jars of corn

prepared in the exact same manner soaked in h2o for 48 hours then simmered for 45 minutes then PC'd for 60 minutes

knocked up with Aussie multi-spore on 3/17

here's the results so far.. these 2 jars are the furthest along

so far the corn jars are doing a wee bit better, but not by much..

Would like to see how this turns out, Keep Us posted on the results. A Good Foaf decided to try popcorn, and isn't too pleased with the results. It seems to colonize slower then WBS, not that this is a proven theory, but just what they have reported back to me.

Popcorn is a lousy spawn material in my opinion, but feed corn is worse. A few growers have reported success with it, but most report bacterial contamination prior to full colonization. For some reason, the bacterial endospores in feed corn are often tough enough to withstand 2 hours in the PC. It helps to soak in warm water for 48 hours first. This germinates those endospores to make them easier to kill in the Pressure Cooker.

popcorn as spawn or substrate? I am sure it would make excellent spawn. And It DOES promote growth as a substrate

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.
