I figured i'd throw some egg shells in my next batch of casings? I've got like five eggs shells, i'm going to powder-ize them soon but i wanted to know how and When to sterilyze them...Should I boil them and then grind them up? Or put them in a jar, PC then grind, then pc again ? lol...
And how much should I put in say...a pints worth of substrate...or is there a ratio? Thankx guys, Can't find shit , thankx for the help

I like to grind them up in a coffee grinder to a powder first. When it's time to make casing, I mix the power in. It doesn't take alot, generally a tablespoon full to 4 cups of casing does the trick. Finally, it all gets sterilized together in the microwave.

O...I thought that it was part of the sub.
So it's just for the casing layer huh...Well it is a Ph modifier(lol)...I just though that they'd benefit from em, kind of like my rose bush outside, makes the roses turn nice and red, very luschious(sp Sux) ...

No problem IGnostic, yeah it's for the casing layer. Ground eggshells could possibly be an interesting addition to a substrate though, you never know.

I put them in a plastic tupperware thing last time, they sat there for like 2wks and it ended up smelling STANK...would it still be ok to use it like that?
I might just grind them up, dry w/ desiccant, then Microwave it and then store it until i make a casing and need it..Sound like a good idea?

What ended up smelling stank, the eggshells? Make sure you remove the membrane on the inside of the shells, that is organic and can rot on you. Eggshells w/ removed membrane ground to a powder should be totally dry.

Gnostic! Just a little off topic, most wbs has some sort of calcium carbonate in it to help the birds. It probably keeps them from getting heart burn. Wbs once pc'ed tends to be sweet opposed to acidic

the visualization of a bird eating anticids juts got me
it's partly for nutrition but the largest reason is for digestion, birds dont have a stomach some much as they do a gizzard, chickens are a prime example, its just a large muscle that works with sand/gravel/grit in order to grind up and break down the food so it can be digested, the oyster shell (generaly the source) is added for that purpose.
