Lab fireball 'may be black hole'
A fireball created in a US particle accelerator has the characteristics of a black hole, a physicist has said.
It was generated at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in New York, US, which smashes beams of gold nuclei together at near light speeds.
Horatiu Nastase says his calculations show that the core of the fireball has a striking similarity to a black hole.
His work has been published on the pre-print website arxiv.org and is reported in New Scientist magazine.
When the gold nuclei smash into each other they are broken down into particles called quarks and gluons.
These form a ball of plasma about 300 times hotter than the surface of the Sun. This fireball, which lasts just 10 million, billion, billionths of a second, can be detected because it absorbs jets of particles produced by the beam collisions.
But Nastase, of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, says there is something unusual about it.
Ten times as many jets were being absorbed by the fireball as were predicted by calculations.
The Brown researcher thinks the particles are disappearing into the fireball's core and reappearing as thermal radiation, just as matter is thought to fall into a black hole and come out as "Hawking" radiation.
However, even if the ball of plasma is a black hole, it is not thought to pose a threat. At these energies and distances, gravity is not the dominant force in a black hole.

Did you see the old episode of the Daily Show where people being intervied about the possible effects of the RHIC? They asked them what they thought about the possiblity of creating small black holes.
Haha the people answered "That sounds bad it might spread to the boroughs."

If they make a life-size black hole, we'll all be jumping in, whether we want to or not.

Nifty. There's been theory about creating black holes in particle accelerators for some time. I'm actually dealing with that in the sci-fi novel I'm writing.

maybe this is part of the whole john titor thing...you know, the means by which he supposedly travelled through time as invented in the future (he used a suitcase-like box that contained mini-blackholes).

He (John Titor) claimed that the device used "dual singularities" or something like that (essentially, two "naked" black holes) and spoke of injecting electrons into the singularities to create a strong local gravitational field.
Good sci-fi material
Personall I'm looking forward to the possibility of using black holes as an energy source...

certain technologies arent permitted to exist due to national security risks. that guy and his lab are probably on fire right now.

You'll be crushed before you make it in.
? You'd be in a normal state at first, then stretching & crushing would occur, you'd hear a real loud fucking noise, you will be slowly disintergrated. Entropy.

This reminds me of some article I read a while ago. About some scientists wanting to create a black hole for some scientific reason. The country protested it, because they were afraid that it would devour the world.
Seems the US scientists just use the "Nike" way of doing things (just do it).

Did you know the French objected to the term "black hole" due to its deviant sexual connotations?
Its amazing what you will learn in Steven Hawking's "The Universe in a Nutshell".

I seem to remember reading that according to your own perceptions, you would never reach the black hole due to the distortion of space-time around black holes...?

lol, that's retarded. even if you think dirty, 'black hole' doesn't make reference to anything sexual. There are pink holes and brown holes, never have i seen a black hole.
