Cactus Cuttings
    #3913012 - 03/13/05 07:15 PM (19 years, 19 days ago)

Greetings all!

I recently received a number of 6" cuttings(9), five being san pedro and the other four being peruvian torches. All of them look nice and healthy except for a few that have an orangeish spot where the cut was made. Should I cut the end sections off of these and allow them to re-callus? Another quick question I had was about potting and rooting them. I have 6" clay pots and some commercial cactus potting mix that is composed of compost, sand, perlite and bone meal. Do I need to add rocks or something similar to the bottom of the pot for drainage?(I have some hydroton that thought might be perfect) and what are the pebbles on top that I have noticed in other peoples pictures? Thanks for any help/advice in advance.

-Peace

I would cut off the discolored regions and allow the cuttings to callus.

Normally commercial cactus soil is too organic. I would add equals parts perlite.

Hydroton would work well in place of drainage stones. I use washed river rock which is available from Lowes for about $3 for 50 pounds. That's probably cheaper than Hydroton.

For top dressing, I used to use aquarium gravel but I switched to washed pea gravel. That latter is also available for about $3 for 50 pounds at Lowes.
