Extremely dry BRF cakes, help out a nervous n00b
    #3853523 - 03/01/05 05:28 PM (19 years, 22 days ago)

Hello, I just birthed a BRF cake and it was bone dry.

It was mostly colonised on the outside apart from a tiny one centimetre "crack" near the bottom (I noticed a stop in growth during the past 3 days). The cake looked quite wet on the outside while in the jar with lots of shroom pee pee around it, but when I cracked the jar open it was very dry and flaky.

I?ve just begun to dunk it (in a jug of boiled water in the fridge) and praying that it will survive.

What are its chances?

This is my first grow and it is the only remaining cake I have left, my others were contaminated.

I also had one other question, since this is my only cake, I wanted to experiment a little and get used to the growing process. I wanted to slice of an inch off the bottom of the cake to case separately and leave the other half to fruit in cake form, will this work or will the "wound" kill it?

I?ve searched and can?t find any decent answers on this subject, any advice would be great.

It should do just fine. Dehydrated cakes are easy to remedy at this point in the grow. Once it's done dunking, I would roll it in moist, sterilized vermiculite to retain the water levels.

If it's your only cake, I would suggest just leaving it to fruit. You can, of course, do what you like...but that would be a very small casing, and a fairly fruitless half-cake. But it'll work if that's the route you choose to go and you follow proper mushroom etiquette.

Dunking would have been fine...in cold water.

Please tell me that you didn't put your cake into boiling water.
If you did...

good luck to ya.

No, I didn't dunk in boiling water, I sterilized the water by boiling it, then let it cool in the fridge before i put the cake in.

So im guessing 15-20 hours submerged. Thanks for the info, i just had to make sure everything was allright with the cake being really dry.
Cheers

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you dunk in warm water, doesn't that kill your spores? I am a noob also

I hope it's 100% colonized. If not, the dunk will finish it off. (Contams)!!!!

did you cover the water when you refrigerated it?? if not, the sterilization was pointless because your fridge has so many contams floating around in it.

Good luck

>Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you dunk in warm water, doesn't that kill your spores? I am a noob also

Spores die at 106F
Myc. tissue dies at 96F

Boiled water is 212F or a bit lower if it cooled some.
Warm water wouldnt kill it but it wouldn't exactly help it, Cold shocking (i.e cold water...well it gets cold when you put it in the fridge) ...(if u dont know what cold-shocking is, then enter it as a keyterm in the search function on this site) helps initate pinning... Good luck everyone.
