First grow... some questions about my cakes. (Pics included)
    #3851509 - 03/01/05 10:52 AM (19 years, 22 days ago)

I'm a newbie and have some questions about my cakes that I birthed 10 days ago.  My first picture is of PESA (which I am quite proud of ) I was wondering... it says that when they are ready to harvest, to grab them at the base and twist them off, but if there are mushrooms not ready to harvest growing next to it, can you remove the one that is ready with a pair of surgical scissors so as not to remove or damage the mushrooms that are not ready to harvest?

My second question is about 2 Ecuador cakes that were birthed at the same time.  They are showing bluing which I believe to be dehydration, but since they haven't started to pin or have a flush yet, I wanted to make sure that it wasn't possibly contamination.  If it is just dehydration, can I possibly dunk them for another 12 hours and put them back in the fruiting chamber?  I was making up my substrate 12 1/2 pints at a time and did have some jars that were too wet, so I'm wondering if these 2 might be too dry. (Thanks for the advice on those two jars PenLight) Since then I've gone to making up my substrate jars 4 at a time; 1/4 cup brown rice, 1/2 cup vermiculite, 1/4 cup + 1 1/2 tbsp water (since I grind my own brown rice and keep it a little chunky) I am using double end casing with inner resevoir.  Thanks for your help and advice!  Peace, Love, Happiness & Harmony - HippyChick

Yes, you can. But I would wait a bit so that the cap starts to open up, or even longer and take a spore print.

Sure you can.

Not contams. Drying a bit. I wouldnt dunk it myself again. If you do though (or next grow) roll it in verm to cover the sides as well as the top and bottoms. Keep humidity at 99% and mist too.

You can also wait on that shroom until the rest mature and then just harvest all at once. You can cut the early bird, I just find it easier to wait. And I dont like cutting and leaving behind remains that could rot. The remains would be fine for a few days until the others are ready, but I'd just leave bits a peices here and there...

It doesnt look good to me...looks like a different kind of white mycelium. Some molds have white myceliums and when its contamed it can often look like that. It could also be bruising though (from dehydration). If its been 2-3 days since you took the pictures and it hasnt spread, then you should be ok. If it is mold, 2-3 days after that picture you should KNOW.

the pics are a little fuzzy but it looks like bruising, not contamination, if it starts growing really fast, toss it.

hippy chick, it looks like you may have primordia forming on the equador, you may
want to wait a couple of days before dunking to see if they are.

Anno                                                                  Thanks for the advice.I was going to consume the first flush and make some prints off the second. Was going to cover the cake with a clear plastic dome to try to get a contaminate free mushroom to make a good print from. Thanks again.Peace,Love, Happiness and Harmony  Hippiechick

Prisoner#1                                                            Yes there are primordia forming on the Ecuador's. Think I will wait till after the first flush and then give it a good dunk and roll, although I thought you could dunk a cake with pins as long as you didn't go over 12 hours, like when you allow invitro pinning before birthing. Thanks for the advice.Peace,Love,Happiness, and Harmony. Hippiechick

No you shouldnt dunk with primordia or pins. You can. Especially with casings if they float. But its not good practice and will probably hurt your flush. Thats the only reason I said I wouldnt at this point...figured primordia would be comming soon. I've seen it hurt my casings, waiting to long...
