GratefulJim....a GPS update please!

So how is the new unit? I'm thinking about getting one also. I'm waiting to hear what you think about the Magellan you bought. Theres so many options out there that its a tough decision.

So give me some feedback. What do you like and what do you dislike about yours?

yeah Id definately like to know as well. A GPS would be sweet for Denali, seeing as how there are no trails.

Sorry guys, I was in Keene Valley for a few days using my GPS!!!

It is great. I am really pleased with it, except this one little thing is missing. The maping function is awesome, but its not topo. For a little more you can get the topo one, with a computer hookup. Spend the extra money, it is worth it.

Overall, I rate the Magellan eXplorist 300 a 4.5 out of 5.

The 300 backtracks, has plenty of storage points. The altimeter is pretty accurate, but the mileage is not. When you are hiking and it tells you how far you have gone it does not take into consideration altitude changes. So, if you are waling uphill for a long time, it will say you walk less than what you actually did.

The barometer and thermometer are just waste. If the GPS is in your pocket, your body heat affects the thermometer reading since the unit is warm.

On the plus side, all of the little intermittent streams and shit are on the map.

I would get a different one with more or different features. Spend more money if you want a real gadget. This unit is the economy model.

Hey, thanks for the update. All the feedback is good. It'll help me make an informed choice eventually.

The thermometer and barometer sound cool at first but they do seem kinda unnessecary on a GPS. I can just as easily carry a pocket weather station if I want that kinda info. Something like this . But personally I do just fine predicting weather on my own by being observant. Nature will tell you all kinds of things if you know what to watch for.

And topo maps would be nice to have displayed also. I always carry topos of areas I backpack through. It'd be nice to have access to them on a GPS unit.

Maybe I'll have to look at something like the Magellan SporTrak Topo. Seems to have most features I would need without too many extra bells and whistles. And all the topo maps are already installed. I would just like to find one with a color display. I'll keep searching.

That unit is a beast! When you do purchase it, if you get it online check yahoo! shopping first. They usually have the best prices for comparison.

The Keene Valley area is amazing. I've only been there for the High Peaks (Giant and Big Slide down so far, more to come hopefully).

What is considered a "high" peak there.  I know its a lot lower out there then out here in the west.  But that really makes no difference.  Whether you hike from 2000' up to 5000' or from 8000' up to 11000' its all about the same.  And the rush is still great when you hit the summit!  Nothing I love more than plopping my tired ass down on top of a peak and soaking up the view!!

I think it's peaks above 4000 feet but I'm not too sure. There are 42 (or a number very close to it).

I'd love to do some hiking out there. I'm sure its got to be beautiful. Much greener than the places I go. Maybe somday I can get out East and do some of the Appalachian(sp?) Trail.

46.

I believe they have to be over 4000ft. Marcy is the highest around 5,200 or somewhere in that vicinity.

I have done most of them, but need ot get back out there to do them in the winter.
