u can put it in the microwave for like 5 mins or less not sure on the time but use a plastic container that is rated 5 or higher or it will melt and glass will brake

hmm... I'm willing to bet that you can just skip this step and roll the cake in the container the vermiculite was microwaved in. Throwing vermiculite on a piece of tin foil that's just been sterilized is asking for mutants.
Also, I'm not sure about the rating you're speaking of, but if it's the recycling logo, shouldn't that be a container that's 5 or LESS? It would seem that something that has been recycled more times would be more likely to melt.

I thought microwaves only heated things with water in them. If you microwave dry vermiculite, how would it get hot?

Micro-Waves. You don't need water to make things hot.
Also, he's referring to their "melting" point. 5 or less means that it can withstand PC'ing temp., You can micro-wave these many many times before they get worn out. I'm not talking about typical use either, I mean doing it almost continually.
Verm. helps hold in moisture, skipping this method isnt the smartest idea. Mushrooms are 92% water, how is giving them more BAD?
Also the note on mutants. You're suppose to WASH it after you sterilyze it, with sterile water or bottled water of course. Mutants would only devolop because of someone not washing the foil of soap or lysol, whatever cleaner you used. So like everything ELSE, If done correctly, it's well worth it.

Just put the vermiculite in a pyrex baking dish and put it in the oven for 15 minutes at 225. Simple. Microwaves only work on metals or water. Putting dry non metallic stuff in the microwave will result in a waste of time. So dont put your verm in the microwave cause it would only get to the boiling point of the water you would have to mix with it. 225F in the oven is perfect.

I heard that the rating only goes up to 5 and that doesnt correlate with the amount of times its been recycled but the temp it can withstand. 5 is the strongest. most rubbermaids are 5 and can get nuked but I have heard on this board long ago that some body used a number less than 5 and it ruined their PC. So I would stick to 5. Its the number inside the triangle of arrows usually on the bottom.

I think we're ignoring the fact that dry vermiculite won't heat up properly in a microwave.
Taken from http://www.howstuffworks.com
Quote:
Microwaves are radio waves. In the case of microwave ovens, the commonly used radio wave frequency is roughly 2,500 megahertz (2.5 gigahertz). Radio waves in this frequency range have an interesting property: they are absorbed by water, fats and sugars
If the vermiculite heats up at all, it's because it's picked up a little moisture from being exposed to air. Just stick to the oven.

You don't need verm after dunking, but most people highly recommend it. After the dunk, take your wet cake out of the jar, roll it around on a plate of dry vermiculite so it sticks to the sides. Next, you'll need either a small container for each cake or you can use the jar lids. What you do is put moist vermiculite in the container until it's even with the sides, then set your cake on top of it. Then, add a thin layer of moist vermiculite to the top of the cake. Now your cake has a moisture reservoir on the top and bottom. Every few days, just add more water to the bottom layer and the top layer to keep them moist so the cakes don't run out of water. This is called double end casing. Most people agree that if you're not going to case, then it's best to dunk, roll, and double end case, and that's how ya do it
