Hey there, Im actually planning the same thing. I will go for it in within the next 3 years if all goes well. Here are some links to get you started on your trip.
this is a good pack list if your very weight concious. http://www.backpacking.net/27-pound.html
the appachian trail conference web site http://www.appalachiantrail.org/
Gorps AT page http://gorp.away.com/gorp/resource/us_trail/appalach.htm
AT maps http://www.rhodesmill.org/thefox/maps.html http://trailquest.net/bigatmap.html
AT planning and news http://www.trailplace.com/portal/index.php
That should get you started in the right direction. When are you planning on doing this? Plan on starting in Maine or Georgia?

Most likely there will be many mushrooms along the way as long as it's not during the winter months. What you find (in the way of mushrooms) would depend on the time of year you go, rainfall/humidity and a few other factors. If you are into edibles, it would be a fun thing to search for while you are on the journey.

23 and Im in chicago. I did a section of the AT this last spring. We were only out for a week, but we did hike up to the highest point on the trail at Clingmans dome. Its kind of crappy though, cause people can just drive up there. After hiking your ass of up and downs for hours, you think your headed for heaven, but then you see the bumbling tourists snapping photos of their bratty kids. Luckily the road was closed when we were there so we had the place all to ourselves.
There are books upon books about the AT. Because its so popular now, its pretty easy to get info. If ya have any questions, Ill be glad to help if I can. If ya get a supporter account you should check out our new hiking/ backpacking forum. Its supa cool!

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson He got about halfway in one summer, then did little sidetrips eventually making to NY. A must read; It's very funny also.

I recommend the Backpacker's Handbook by Chris Townsend.
I'm planning the same thing starting April 2006.

I was about to recommend that. It's a great book... all of Bill Bryson's stuff is excellent, actually.

Im actually in the middle of reading that book now. It's a good book. The Appalachian Trail does not seem like a walk in the park but it would be an experiance of a life time.

I used to go to Appalachian State University in Boone, NC so I'm familiar with the AT. I've hiked in Western NC a bit and camped some, nothing extensive. I've wanted to make the whole trip but haven't really planned for it. I'm not prepared enough now and don't have enough money saved so this year is probably out of the question. I might just hike half of it or something in late summer/early fall this year before it gets too cold. anyway, I don't know that I'll be living in this country next year. I'd love to do this sometime, though.

It sounds like an experiance but is it worth putting aside 5-7 months out of your life? Yestarday i walked part of the Jersey section of the trail for around around 10 miles. It was lots of fun but 10 is nothing compared to over 2,100 miles

since im planning on doing this in the future, i have more than enough time to read up... i was wondering which books could be helpful while im out in the woods for that long. i was thinking about survival books, worse case scenerio type books, books that identify edible plants, books that identify edible mushrooms, books to teach meditating (maybe tai chi or yoga) So anyone know titles of books that would be useful?

Backpacking in Europe will be an entirely different experience. Both times that I have gone to Europe backpacking i have spent a considerable amount of time in cities, etc. There is definitely not as much open land/mountains for hiking, and camping is often frowned upon due to the problems associated with it, although you could pirate camp if you foudn some isolated spots and took care to "leave no trace". At the same time, I know of places in Switzerland where you can hike from village to village stretched over miles of Alps. In these villages are small restaurants, pensions or hostels. The culture of Europe would be the biggest perk, but if you are looking for a wilderness getaway, I would stick with North America. There are just that many more truly untouched areas, and there are far fewer regulations regarding camping, fires, etc. Not to mention the lowers costs (US dollar is worth shit nowadays). Switzerland offers some good smoke if you play your cards right in the hemp shops. Not "for sale" but definitely "for sale" at the same time depending on the shopkeeper.
I can answer any more questions people might have, althuogh my hiking experiences are limited to Switzerland and S. Germany.
