Tired of heavy loads? well here is a good packing list for those looking to lighten up your pack. The configuration as shown is a 27 pound pack for a 7 day hike. Really good info.

On the subject of light packing, I usually carry the least amount of stuff as possible. I have even gone with nothing to sleep in, was an interesting experience.

Ive met lots of people that do the whole AT with nothing but a tarp for sleeping under. I dont think I could handle three months without a tent, in the rain, with satanic mosquitos buzzing about. I'll bare the 3 pounds of tent for added comfort. Just not one of those things I can give up yet.

Here's another good one
http://hikinghq.net/ Tons of useful info, and tips on how to lighten the load.. plus make your own alcohol stove, etc.

I tried the ultralight tarp thing, doesn't work too good on bluffs or grasslands where there are lots of ticks.
shroomism, nice post, those little alcohol tuna can stoves can work pretty well, and save alot of weight if you're only hiking for a few days, otherwise the weight of fuel gets to be more than a gas stove.
How often to you guys actually pack stoves tho? I rarely bring them along and use a fire instead

i use stoves alot. several reasons:
1. no fires are allowed due to regulations or fire danger 2. you don't smell like smoke, esp nice if multi day trip 3. more of a leave no trace ethic
on weight. i'm certainly not an ultralight packer. i try and go lighter but im going to take things i want to make it enjoyable. with a proper pack some extra weight is negligible imo

That's why I got an ultralight hammock. I didn't like the idea of the lightweight tarp on the ground.. too many open variables of bugs/rain. The hammock is fucking sweet.

The Safari Deluxe was developed for people who like really big hammocks. This is our deepest and widest and most comfortable hammock for larger people or even for cozy couples whose combined weight does not exceed 350 lbs. This model includes a a double wide hex shaped fly. Ideal for car camping, boat camping, out at the cottage or in the back yard.- currently on backorder
Oh and Odin or anyone.. if you get a hammock from hennessy.. go for the extra large sil-nylon rain fly upgrade.. it's worth the extra coverage.
Vivid.. I always bring my little MSR stove with me. I don't think you're supposed to use titanium cookware on campfires?.. but a lot of times I don't even end up using my stove.. someone else will do the cooking or give me food. But it's always there when I need it.

The only issue I would have with relying on a hammock is that I have spent many nights camped in areas where theres not a tree around. Sometimes it has been in deserts and other times it was on mountains above the tree line. Last time I was backpacking in the Sierras we spent many nights in glacial valleys with not a tree around.
Other then that they look pretty cool.

Yeah that's the biggest downside.. if there are no trees.
However...... many a hammocker uses hiking poles to set the hammock up on the ground like a bivy/tarptent when there are no trees available..
The other biggest problem is that since your backside is exposed (only a thin layer of material under you where wind roams free..no ground under you like in a tent).. you need to worry about extra insulation underneath you in the colder months so you dont freeze your ass off..literally. For this you can make your own "underquilt" or buy one.. essentially just a thick sleeping bag with a waterproof shell that is strapped around the outside bottom of the hammock.

I'm digging the hammock. I paddled some of the back-country Everglades canoe trails, where you sleep on a platform called a "chickee" (the word for the traditional shelters made by Florida's Native Americans (Seminoles and Miccosukees) which are built and maintained by the National Park Service. Here's what they look like. Normally you set a free-standing tent on the chickee, but it would be pretty cool to set the hammock up across the front and swing at night, with the sound of "gators" swiming around

I'd never carry more than 25 lbs on any long distance journay, weekends and 4-5 day outtings are another story. Going light is the only way. Much easier on the body and burns less calories, it's all around smarter if you can afford it.
Also that list is 3 years old, ultra-lighting has been revolutionized since then. It no longer means tarps, 2x2 sleeping pads and a handle less toothbrush. There's many cheap, light options out tehre. Go-lite and tarp tent make extremely light tents that are to be set up with hiking poles, many of these have vestibules and floors in them, they are usually cheaper than the 5 lb shelters also. I know a guy who was outfitted with 300$ and had 8 lbs of gear, a lot of it from wal-mart.
I'll write up a post one of these days about going light, cheap and comfortable.

Ultralighting is OK, but if you start off by REALLY training to carry a 45-60lb pack, it's not that big of a deal. I like to eat decent food and be warm when I go hiking, not try to make a pine bough shelter every night

I carry 10lbs of gear, sleep warm and eat good.
Ultra-lighting is no longer tarping, handless toothbrushes and powerbars.
