Dry layer of verm seems too moist
    #376422 - 08/22/01 12:53 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

I'm boiling my jars and their covered w/ foil but I just opened a jar and the top dry layer of verm seems really moist.will it be ok or are contams more than likely going to take hold.I think the moisture inside may have been too much since I did'nt grind my rice up completely. It was still a little chunky.

I haven't even innoculated them yet.The top layer that is supposed to be dry has become almost as moist as my substrate during the boiling.will the top layer dry out or even if it does the moisture will introduce contams won't it?

id toss them. you hafta keep the water low and bunch the
tinfoil around the lip. id say you used to much water. if
ur boiling them in a pot about 1 inch of the jar should be
submersed, not more. remember medium heat only

This happened to a freind of mine...

She put 4 jars into a pot, and filled it up with water so that the water was half-way up the jar. Then she put the stove on High, until it started boiling, and then she put it on medium.

She ade a couple of mistakes... First, she should have put her tinfoil wrapped around the lip of the jar, and she should have taped it if she had to. Second, she should not have put the water half way up the jars... 1 inch is enough. Third, she should not have put the heat on medium. She should have put it on the lowest setting possible.

Since she didn't do these things, a couple of jars had water splashed into them. Not a lot, but some; one worse than the other. She innoculated them anyway. One turned out fine, the other took a long time to colonize, especially the bottom of it.

If your jars are really wet, then don't colonize; it's not worth it. Make a new batch.

I had the same problem with 2 of my jars except I didnt notice it until the cakes were completly colonized and I was birthing them. They colonized with no problems so I wouldnt suggest tossing them.
