Mycobag steps.

Im sorry I ask alot of stupid questions, but im a complete noob. If someone could explain all the steps to mycobags it would be much appreciated. I know: sterilize needle and wipe around bag with some alcohol. Inject.....Then what? How long should I wait to open it. Then, after I pick all the mushrooms out, How do i prepare it for the 2nd/3rd flush? But yeah, like I said, if someone could post the steps and procedure they took with a mycobag, its be greatly appreciated.

You dont need knowledge specifically on mycobags. You can almost think of a mycobag as a big cake. Understanding the basics of cultivation will help you in whatever you are trying to cultivate. I see a lot of new folks following techniques step by step so strickly that they dont allow themselves to use common sense and think on their own.
1.) inoculate. 2.) Incubate (make sure gas exchange is possible) 3.) birth when completely colonized (optimal temps, fresh sterile air, light, humidity) 4.) harvest before spores drop.

You're absolutely right. It's easy to follow steps, but it's not always clear why you are following certain steps. Practice is really the only way to work through this. For example: when I first learned about dunk-and-roll, I was thinking about questions like "Does the size of the vermiculite matter? Should I mist the vermiculite before rolling? How wet should it be? Etc..." Then I came to the realization that the purpose of dunk-and-roll is to lock in as much moisture as possible. After that, everything fell into place.

what are the negatives of harvesting after the spores drop?
a: you cant get spore prints, obviously and b: it hinders the next flushes growth, right?
any other downsides?

well i cannot give you much info as i have never fruited a mycobag but i got a newbie friend started with his. one good tip i can give you is this, when myc appears and there is a spot of it about the size of a half dollar mash the bag up real good and mix it all around. dont look at it for two days and you will be astonished at how much it has multiplied. do the same thing again a few days later and the bag will be fully colinized in no time. it took my friends bags two weeks to fully colinize and he was incubating them at a average temp of 65-70 degrees farenheit.

Can I use an oven bag sealed with surgical tape, or does it need a breathing patch?

after they are colonized do you have to take them out of the bag and case them? Can you just let it fruit in the bag? I have to imagine that would make the yeild small though.

We all do things different. To a point he is right.I wait till the bag is about 20% colonized then mix.My fastest bag was done in 12 days,4 lb's,(newbie luck)same amount of time it some qt's I had going.
The down side is a bag stalling.May take 3 to 7 days to recover if at all.

Cervantes said: Quick question frock. Did you inoculate the middle of the substrate, or did you inoculate around the edges, making sure to squirt the fluid between the lining of the bag and the substrate?
With Mycobags, you should ALWAYS inject so the solution hits both the bag itself, and the substrate. You do this for a few reasons. First... if you inject the outside of the substrate, you will see growth much more quickly. If you inject the middle, it will need to colonize for a long time before you see any growth. Does this make sense? Also, since you didn't mash your substrate, the middle of the substrate may be too dense to colonize. Mycelia likes to grow on substrate with the density of potting soil. Not the density of a brick.
If you injected the middle of your bags, you may want to break your bags up in another week, even if you don't see any growth. This way, you can see if there is any growth in the middle of the bag. If you find none, you can probably re-inoculate the bag. Chances are the spores stalled from the density of the substrate. After two weeks, the spores should be growing... so no growth likely means stalled spores.
Mycobags are simple. IF you know how and when to mash them, and the proper injection technique. Until you get those teks down though, mycobags can be a little frustrating.
Perhaps Mycobag can make an injection video... showing the proper way to inject the substrate of a Mycobag. Like, with an edible Mycokit or something.
Here is a link to a video showing proper MycoBag mashing procedure.
