vermiculite; uses and alternatives
    #3733983 - 02/05/05 03:17 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

hi people,
i've two questions?
first can someone tell, for what vermiculite is used in the cakes, i know it keeps water, the humidity must be high, so perlite doing the same job right?, i have perlite but can't find vermiculite here in my country. found in another city but too far to get.

well , i found something else, it's called grun and a silicat based grain for holding water, but doesn't seems like vermiculite. it's rocky, and heavier than verm. as told.

i'm writing the properties of the verm. and that mineral's prop.

TYPICAL CHEMICAL ANALYSIS [Vermiculite]
Element Percent by Weight
SiO2 38-46
AL2O3 10-16
MgO 16-35
CaO 1-5
K2O 1-6
Fe2O3 6-13
TiO2 1-3
H2O  8-16
Other 0.2-1.2
--------------------

and the rocky stuff that i've found here

Element Percent by Weight
SiO2 71
AL2O3 12
MgO 9
CaO 3
K2O 3
Fe2O3 1
TiO2 0
H2O  0
Other 0
Na2O 1

*******

i'm planning to use that with perlite in the PF Tek Cake tomorrow,
any suggestions ? i read about pomice but it didn't come helpful, well thx from now, peace.  :rasta:

Perlite will work for cakes. I have a buddy who used it for that, worked fine he'll be birthing the cakes real soon.

hei, i tried my cakes with perlite (errr i think its what you call "perlite". i used "seramis" which looks like the stuff you put in cats toilet  but its used for plants). It works for me, i used syringe to start. Used the small size granulat.
I drained my seramis with fresh water before mixin it (the stuff i use is ugly orange-brown colored). Do not mix too much riceflour with it because it will clump. Do not pound the jars, just fill fluffly and dont forget a dry layer of perlite "on top". PC the perlite-mix as usual.
Only thing is that the cake will not "shrink" during col. Its sometimes kind of hard to get it out of the jar  I use to do a little assist to birth with a sterile spoon inside a sterile bag held over the jar. Crumble the pieces and case with substrate you use. I never tried to fruit the cake out of the jar. good luck

Perlite cake, almost fully colonised => looks to work pretty good.
