First, Im a very open minded person and enjoy all genres of music. Iv'e gottten into the pink floyd stuff, Dillan, the Doors, the Beatles. Jimi Hendrix..etc.etc. For some reason, when I listen to the Grateful Dead, they just dont strike that much of an interest. Im wondering if there has to be some type of introduction for me to fully understand what all you Dead heads see in this band. They are obviously popular for a reason and I just want to experience a tinge of this enchantment that you shroomerites feel. What are some good songs that you recommend for a first timer?

It took me a long time to get into the Dead, but then I downloaded the album "American Beauty." As far as tracks, I recommend Ripple, Truckin, Friend of the Devil, Box of Rain, Jack Straw, and Brokedown Palace.

Deadheads always kept telling me to listen to Dark Star, but I always thought the vocals on that track were sub-par. One reason it took me so long to get into the Dead is that Deadheads kept recommending the wrong tracks.

I feel the same about the grateful dead as you do. although it's good music it really isn't my thing. I don't mind it actually, there's plenty of other good music out there that I do like and as with all music styles-->some strike you and some don't. I wouldn't force it to yourself to like them

i really dig "help on the way" and the jam they go into after that called "Franklin's Tower"
also, "China Cat Sunflower" is a bad ass song, as well as "Box Of Rain"..
my gf doesn't really like the dead but she likes "touch of grey" so you might, too? i dunno.
i love 'em, but it definitely took me a while to get into it.. even after that i still have to be in the mood for them usually..

I never really got into the dead either but i love Pink Floyd. Try getting stoned and just relaxing and close your eyes and listen to the slow solos from the wall. They will take you away.

First of all to get into The Dead you have to get into the music the dead is all about. Its a strange mixture of rock, bluegrass, and a variety of stuff. As far as musicians go their ontop of the late 60s psychedelic, with Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver messenger service up there as well.
A very different style.

yeah, i used to hate pink floyd, until I REALLY listened to DSOTM. before that all i heard was their really 80's type stuff. The Wall didnt do it for me on its own. Now I can see appreciation in the Wall.

not just anyone can dig the dead, and not everyone can dig them at all times.

If you do LSD and listen to the dead, you can't not like them. Friend of the devil is my favorite.

I really didn't like the Dead until I bought the vinyl Wake of the Flood and listened to Eyes of the World.
