No casing layer with colonized rye?

I?ve been having problems with contam. casings recently, regardless of how sterile the
working environment is. Can fully colonized whole grain rye be layed out as if it were
going to be cased, and then just left like that in the terrerium? Kind of like a big, flat, PF
cake? Would this fruit, and, how much smaller would the yields be if I went this route?
Any ideas? Thanks guys, MiAstoR

That'll work. I reccomend you try a straight verm casing instead.

I had the same problems with my rye and casing using the 50/50. I switched to coco fiber and have had only success since then. Case and wrap with tin foil for a few days and leave at 86 degrees. Remove tin foil put in terrarium with 94 humidity and 86 temp for a couple more days. Drop temp to 72-74, humidity 80-90, as many air exchanges as you can get, wait, voila. If you cannot get coco then Puscle is right, try verm first.

Cool. Thanks guys. When you case with coco fiber, how thick do you make the coco fiber layer? Also, do you sterilize the fiber before casing with it? Would it have to be pressure cooked or could you microwave it for a while? Thanks

My coco layer is about 1/2 - 3/4" thick, but trust me, it won't really matter, it colonises like the wind. I have been sterilizing mine in qt jars (a little paranoid with all my casing problems). But it is not necessary if you are clean. Just soak in water (not tap) squeeze excess moisture and away you go. If you do not sterilize be clean! Second flush on last casing with 1/2" coco produced a 7" shroom that weighed 32 gms wet. An 8"x11" casing has so far produced an oz dry on only two flushes and the second one was small.

OK, when you lay out the coco, do you leave it packed real tight or a fluffy 1/2 inch layer? cause i was leaving the verm casings pretty fluffy when i made them.

mordor, where do you get your coco fibre. someone told me on a post earlier that gro-brick was coco fibre.

www.windowbox.com carries the gro-brick brand. we just found a local hydroponic shop in town and they carry it as well... havent seen it in big chains. watch out for the pet bedding kind, and ones that are treated with trich.
