Buying large quanities of BRF & Vermiculite
    #3653790 - 01/20/05 02:08 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Man I went to whole foods and they only had 2lb bags @ $3.28. I purchased 4 bags and for $13 with tax that is a rip off. As well I got some vermiculite from home depot, these small little bags. I am going to try out some nursery for larger quantities. I can't think of another spot besides these health food markets that would have brown rice flour.

you should consider spawning a bulk substrate instead of making 200 pf jars.

Totally off topic man, I am using large bags that hold about 6 pints of vermiculite, 3 pints of water and 3 pints of BRF. Sorry buddy, I am an expert and not a newbie. I can buy a 50lb bag of BRF online, but I would rather buy one locally to avoid shipping costs and etc.

Please stay on topic, yes only newbies use jars in my opinion.

I was under the assumption that brf had the most carbo for mycillium development. Now I am hearing grain is better for mushrooms, so I will be switching to that as my substrate.

Nobody uses large bags of brf verm? I thought I read of someone having success with it (it wasn't hippies half baked ovenbag thing either).
I have considered doing it but then figured moisture content would easily get out of whack.
The only reason I considered it is because Im lazy and I was out of dung and straight PF tek makes me sick.
Does anybody know that this is a bad idea? I mean with the appropriate bag?
The only thing I can see going wrong is moisture falling to the bottom of the bag. I mean its easy to prepare and sterilize. As long as the syringe is clean you have pretty much got it whooped. It would have the contam resistance of a PF cake.
Does anyone know about large bags of PF substrate when it comes to even moisture content?? Do you have to roll it around?

Why would it have more watercontent problems then rye in a bag or a PF jar?

Ive never tried it but it seems like the weight of the saturated verm would kinda squeeze itself causing the water to fall to the bottom of the bag. Verm compresses easier than grain. Grains hold on to water.

Imagine picking up a few qrts of PF substrate in a pillow case. It will drip like crazy.
Imagine picking up 1/2 pnt in a pillow case. It probably wouldn't drip at all.
Back when I used to do large batches of PF in one mixing container I had to make sure I mixed it ever so often while I was packing the jars because the PF mix at the bottom would just be soaked while the mix on top was perfect.
I maybe wrong but I think alot of PF substrate in a bag would have like a pool of water in the bottom.

This guy is the expert so he probably has the secret.

Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..
How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber

The weight of the substrate would pack it down and sqeeze water out. Besides that just the packing down of it would give slow colonization and poor fruiting. Not to mention the poor nutrients which will be lacking to create a decent flush of mushrooms. And we wont even talk about potency compared to bulk.

a 3 quart wbs bag or rye bag soaked simmered and pc-ed will not be much lighter or will it? The nutrients in pf cakes arent that bad and giving potent mushrooms. It was not a comparison between (potency of) brf and bulk was it?

edit: aint gonna try it anyway but was just wondering why 2 pounds of verm/brf will give water content probs and 2 pounds of hydrated wbs/rye (with *some* verm) wont.
