Oven bags
    #3653179 - 01/20/05 10:56 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

When using Renolds oven bags as spawn bags, is air exchange needed? Just wondering if I need to use some polyfill to let a little bit of air in/out while the poo is colonizing.

thanks for the help

Yes.

Cut the very top off a 2 litter bottle. Now you have two peices (the top of the bottle with the threads and the lid that screws onto it). Unscrew them and cut a hole in the top of the lid. Put the bag through the top of the bottle with the threads and fold the sides down over it. Screw the lid on over the bag...now you have a clamp at the top of the bag. Stuff it with pollyfil or use a peice of tyvek in the threads. Polyfil will give you a self healing injection port but since your spawning, not such a big deal. Or you could just cook up the poo in the oven in spawn bags with no patch then mix it up in a tub with spawn and cover with plastic wrap with holes in it or tin foil..

You dont need to let air in and out...just excess co2 out. For colonization you want GAS exchange (excess relese of gasses that build up) as opposed to AIR exchange (active exchange of fresh air)

The bags are cheap, I think a box of 2 or 3 goes for around 2.50. And the polyfil, a big big bag of it is about 2 bucks in the craft department of walmart.

oven bags arent that cheap, both http://mycobag.com and http://sporeworks.com have
them for $.40 each (large spawn bags) do the math and at $2.50 the oven bags are
$.83 each and that doesnt include the polyfil, bottle for the neck and cap

so for about $12.50 you can get 12 oven bags or for about the asme money you can have 20 large spawn bags($8+shipping)

Shipping included, the myco bags are still a better buy. Oven bags are expensive!

the price for 20 large spawn bags is only $8, 15 for 6 at sporeworks, I usualy buy
in larger quantity to offset the shipping, 100-200 bags at a time but even still,
it was about $15 for the first 20 bags aI got from sporeworks

Its 41 bucks for 100 shipped from here:
http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/product...715DCF4A410E7FC

Which is only like 5 bucks cheaper then shipped from sporeworks but the main reason I went about this method when I did bags (I hate bags and only did 4 straw and 2 grain before) is because I couldnt get the damn sealer to work right. I got a nice one off ebay but I wasted ALL 15 mycobags I originally ordered to contams. None of the other 6 I did contamed. Plus the polyfil lid provides a "self healing injection port". The bags with those are more expensive.

Why couldn't you get your sealer to work right? Was it the double element heat sealer with adjustable settings type?

Yeah...I would either have small spaces (not big but pin sized..big enough for contams) that wouldnt seal or burn small spaces the same size right through the bag putting holes. This was like 5 months ago (when I was 2 months into the hobby) and I didnt know you should double seal them and we had no extra bags to practice on by the time we relized we should have one.

I also had to inject into the side of the bag (no port) and didnt know that I should wipe the bag (or at least the spot) with alcohol first. Did the needle, but not the spot. Never did on jars before that (since I have done it to jars too my contam rates gone down though).

you can put silicone on the bag and it creates a self healing injector point
