An Encrypted Instant Messenging Program
    #3652519 - 01/20/05 07:02 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Is there a such thing? Like a hushmail, but end to end encrypted Instant Messaging?

IRC over SSL in a channel that is SSL only (on unrealircds this is channelmode z).  That's how I do it.  Failing that, IRCing with people all running a script/plugin that encrypts/decrypts text with a good algorithm, such as blowfish et al.  When possible, I mix the two for sure security   These plugins/scripts can be applied to many things, like you can write a gAIM plugin to encrypt/decrypt and then you can have encrypted IM over MSN, Yahoo, AOL and more.

Just realize they are still subject to subpoena and other things... By law they have to keep certain logs for months, so no matter how secure it looks, indepent is the best way to go, in this paranoid person's opinion.

http://aimencrypt.com/

Anyone who uses AIM should get this. You get a cool lock next your name too.

I still think dead aim + aim with encryption is the best client. Dead aim gets rid of all the ads and BS shit from aim. THe very newest version of AIM sucks ass tho im using 1 back. Its just too busy.

Unless, *gasp* somebody keeps a log  :smirk:

Use  Jabber and an SSL plugin.

Which can still be logged, so that'll always be a problem .  Fortunately, it should be only a local-security issue.  The point of SSL and end-to-end encryption is for sure transmission security .

aimencrypt is just a false sense of security. AimEncrypt uses the same certificate for everyone - this means that anyone can download your certificate and use it to decrypt your messages.

I've heard good things about http://ca.cryptgate.com

although, GAIM + the encryption plugin is the best bet.
trilllian pro also offers encryption as well - but that costs money.

True but it makes it be one more step and some reverse engineering. Anyone can monitor ports locally can completly read aim conversations.

I like dead with tabbed windows, transparency, setting idle, and others. It removes all ads tickers and stupid shit.

Ive used gaim for a whie and i dont think its as good as deadaim. I had stability problems with XP and thought it was just plane ugly. As well of if i remember right lack of color option and warning. The UI in it opensourced all around and kinda fucked on par with a lot of open source. Another thing i just remembered that bugged me about gaim is people with long screennames it would overlap the tab thing and go into the message.

Or the trillion one just seams bloated with junk.

Unless they have done some major work to it in the past year. Properly installed dead aim > gaim > trillion

wow, lots of different opinions... i guess ill add mine based on what ya'll suggested.

hushmail messenger; not really secure since hushmail knows your key and has the right to log

aimencrypt.com; not really secure since they allow you to download all the possible keys

http://ca.cryptgate.com; sounds secure since every key is unique and they 'say' they dont keep records of they keys gend

IRC SSL; sounds like the best security, unless the server knows the key? then like said adding blowfish would be totally secure

gAIM + Gaim-Encryption; sound security, and easy to use.

im goin with gAIM

have you tried http://www.miranda-im.org ?
it is opensource, not ugly like gaim, and has a encryption plugin.
it is also crossplatform unlike aim. it is not bloated like trillian
in fact it runs real light.

I wish deadaim was still free.

On linux gaim works great. But like you said, on windows it's pretty buggy. It's still buggy with file transfers on linux though.
