did i find some hay caps?
    #365068 - 08/01/01 09:46 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

i was looking for a frisbee that i lost in my nieghborhood, and i came across these little mushrooms in a thing of grass next to the sidewalk. the thing that made this spot different was that there was a tree that used to be there and since they chopped it down there was some a large patch of sawdust there. well i picked these three little mushrooms and took them home to see if i could identify them with my eyewtness handbook on mushrooms. well i found out that these mushrooms were prolly hay caps (panaeolus foenisecii) they fit all the discriptions (cap width 1-3 cm, stem length 4-6 centimeters, red-brown stem and cap, and dark brown spores) are these mushrooms potent? under edibility it says they are deadly, but it also says that about the psilocybe species, and fly agaric. any info would be appreciated.

They were probably growing around the stump in the area, but not directly from it, that is if they are indeed Pan. foenisecii, which it sounds like they are. They are not deadly, or hallucinogenic, nor are they considered a worthwhile edible. They were once considered weakly hallucinogenic, but later it was found that this was due to a false positive from a mixed collection. Many guides still list them as active but this is untrue, they are a bad tasting inactive mushroom and thats about it.

Since they arent hallucenogenic, and taste bad, I canot see why they would be worth wasting your time/space growing. Grow subbs in the space instead, or better yet, cyans.

It really doesnt matter what family they are in. It is the species that will make you trip. Different species are different for a reason: BEACAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT. They are always going to be different in some way, otherwise they would be the same species. It just so happens that these are different because one is hallucinogenic and one is not.

as in different i meant a different chemical is what makes you trip (not sure if this is the case with this specie) fly agarics dont contain psilocybin do they? i think not, and they still make you trip.

Fly agarics contain a chemical that is pretty exclusive to this genus i think. Now, think about this:

Amanita muscria can make you trip. Amanita virosa, which is in the same family, can kill you. You cannot go around eating any old amanita mushroom and expect to trip (or even live as the case may be). It works basically the same way with the panaeolus mushrooms. There are several different Pan. species that wont make you trip. I think Mjshroomer's website has a few of them on it.

What makes you think that ink caps are active? Some of the species in the Coprinus family can make you very ill if you drink alcohol with a period of say 10 or so days.
Panaeolus and Copelandia species have a black spore print, which is considered to be "coprinous".
The commonly used term "Inky Cap" refers to Coprinus atramentarius, a Mushroom containing "Coprine" which is poisonous and will make a person very ill if they were to consume alcohol with a fairly long period of time.

i am not exactly sure if they are hay caps anymore. they look more like the tufted brittle head (psathyrella multipedata) wich arent anything usefull since they aren edible or hallucinogenic.

So either way, both are a useless mushroom not worth the time of day!

And I don't know of any Inkys that get you high....some are edible though, including the one which gets you sick if you drink alchohol. Did you know that they made a treatment for alcholocs out of the chemicals found in Coprinus atremantarius?

how the hell did people find out that mushrooms (those ink caps you talked about) can treat alchohalics? someone had to eat those shrooms, and then a few days later drink some alchohal and get sick. what are the odds?

if one drinks too much from a bottle marked pioson, it is most certain to dissaprove one sooner or later.

Someone also ate the Death Cap, too. That's how we know it can kill people. It sucks, but it has happened. :(

Indeed, there are thousands of plants around the world with medicinal qualities. How the shamans figured them all out is beyond me!
