ultrasonic humidifier or Perlite
    #363613 - 07/30/01 02:18 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

I found an ultra sonic humidifier today someone was throwing ti out. I took it home and the thing is brand new not a scratch on it. however the filter looks like it had dirty water in it(the place i foudn it has lots of rust in the water). My questionnis should i buy a new filter and use this(or can it be sterilized somehow) or should i stick with perlite.
The perlite works great now that i have found a fanning schedule that works for me.(4 times aday and i mist it every other time.)
I will also add that there are both cakes and casings in the rubbermaid container

Thank You

I am a firm believer that simplicity is key. I prefer to use perlite.
The more complicated your setup gets, the harder it is to maintian long term. I mean if you are relying on humidifiers and it one day fails, you have to figure out a temporary method until your wallet can rectify the problem. With perlite there is nothing to break on you (except maybe the occaisional contam).
Just my take on things, its a matter of personal preference really. They both work just as well.

yeah this is what i was thinking. Now that i have the fanning figured out perlite is working great for me.
I jsut wasn;t sure if it would be worth the hassle forany reason. maybe air exchange or something?
But as you said this is simple ans works good why bother

Thank you

ultrasonic humidifiers are very prone to failure....
best way is to use an coolmist seup...no work at all once, and very durable.
also it provides lots of fresh air to the terrarium....

Damn i thought ultra sonic was better had a cool mist sitting here the whole time. I figured it brought to many contams in with the air flow.

Thanks for the input.
PS. Club99 if you remember i said i threw all that honey water out (with the weird mushroom cap looking thing in it.). thought it was bad. well i had left a few on my stove becuse some of them smell real bad. went to throw them out and 1 was colonizeing jsut slow. I think the water was good but u had used to much water in the other jars (lots of water on the bottom). So turns out that that weird growth was mycelium.
just thought you might like to know incase you see it again.

well you can use a 10% solution of water/peroxide in the coolmist to keep out contams.....
ot you can use some colloidal silver instead of peroxide.....
it's used to sterilize water/vegetables....

Cool mist is absolutely superior to ultrasonic humidifiers. Give it a try and see how it works for you when compared to the perlite tek.
