Mushroom Id Pics
    #3587113 - 01/06/05 12:29 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I found a few different species of mushroom growing within close proximity of a creek located 90 miles north of San Francisco. There were wood chips and leaves that the fungus was growing on. I believe the larger, dark brown mushroom is Clitocybe tarda. I'm not entirely sure though.

Clitocybe tarda?

...???

Possibly a third species???

Any suggestions?

The first ones very much resemble Galerina. Do they have true gills or a pore surface? A rusty brown spore print will confirm this. If it is indeed Galerina, they are probably horribly deadly poisonous and should be discarded.

Judging by the pink gills I see through the caps of your guess of a Clitocybe, I would have to say they are from the genus Pluteus. Growing from wood would also be a good indicator. Pluteus should be avoided as far as edibility is concerned.

Sorry, I rearranged all the pictures so I hope that his identification doesn't confuse anyone... Thanks

Spore prints should be done all around to correctly identify your mushrooms. I will say the second to last one seems interesting. Notice any BLUE bruising? If so, make sure it true blue and not black.

If not, those black gills tell you got a dark sporeprint. My guess is a Stropharia or Agaricus, with the possibility of Galerina in mind. All of your mushrooms should be considered deadly or toxic until they are further ID'ed. Get them prints goin

Picking these mushrooms and taking an adventure out into our mysterious ecosystem almost makes me feel human again. It's funny how something so simple can bring so much enjoyment; heck, I havn't been this happy since my first bicycle. lol... Are there any psychoactive mushrooms that can be found within a close vicinity from my house? I know there are Psilocybe cyanescens in this area but I can never seem to find them.. What are the ideal growing conditions for this species?

Spore prints will be important for identifying all these.

If the first one is indeed Clitocybe tarda, then a spore print on white paper should be pinkish, not pure white.

The second ones suggest Hypholoma at a quick glance and the last ones Stropharia.

What each one was actually growing from is very important. Clitocybes are mycorrhizal and Hypholoma and Stropharia are saprophytic, so we need to know if they were growing directly from the dead wood or from the ground under the wood chips.

Happy mushrooming!
