if anybody wants it, i've developed a discussion board system using mod-perl, mysql, and html templates... but it runs off my own API, so you'd have to use that as well (it's called WebApp and it owns PHP :smile:

). Currently only in beta form, but give it 6 more months and it'll be released on sourceforge.

A lifetime license costs $725

I wouldn't recommend going with it if you are just starting out, there are better solutions out there. We are using it because we always used it and our users got used to it.

Check out a free board, I recommend www.simplemachines.org

Many thanks, Anno! Simple Machines is exactly what I need.

On a related note, does The Shroomery generate enough income to cover bandwidth expenses? Or is running a message board a money pit? I'm determined to put one together either way, but I'm not exactly flush with cash. I'm hoping to cover expenses with banner ads, but I fear I may see all my disposable income sucked into maintenance costs.

The Shroomery generates enough income to cover the hosting and hardware expenses, yes.

As for your board, it really depends what it is going to be about and how much traffic it will generate.
Start with a cheap host and adjust the hosting depending on your needs.

www.irevolution.org uses invision power board, it is $200 for a lifetime license. We l=also use TopClassHost which is dirt cheap for good hosting...
